Food tour in Machane Yehuda

Has anyone done the 'Shuk Bites' self-guided tour of Machane Yehuda? I stumbled upon this looking for foodie tours in Israel.
If you have done it is it worth the price? Or would I be better off just going around the market on my own? I like that this way you kind of get a taste for everything and that you don't have to use the whole thing in one day.

While I am on the subject does anyone have any other recommendations for foodie tours in Israel?

  1. I've never heard of these - but definitely interested in hearing if others have used this tour and what they think. The last time my mother visited me, I tried to arrange a tour of the shuk and it completely fell through.

One thing to beware of - a significant number of some of the most famous restaurants/cafes in the shuk are not kosher. Some (such as the Indian restaurant) just gave up its certificat in the past year or so due to disagreements with the rabbanute. So pay attention if that's important to you.

Also - I would highly recommend not going on Friday. I understand that for some tour groups seeing all the people crowded together is part of the sight seeing process, but if you really want to just enjoy yourself and the food - Friday is a terrible time.

    1. Dont miss the "mashke hamelech" beverage. But make sure you're ok with what's in it. My sources tell me it contains a mild (legal in Israel, not in the US) narcotic called Qat.
