Japanese restaurant needed

  • 9

Group of women and the last time we went for Japanese, we went to Japonica and got the little room which was loads of fun. some of us like sushi and a few just want a great piece of cooked fish. Need somewhere new. Not ultra fancy but the same kind of feel. Request was for near or above Grand Central (a few catching the train afterward) or Columbus Circle area. Any ideas? Thanks.

  1. There are so many near Grand Central.
Sakagura, Aburiya Kinnosuke, Soba totto...to name a few.

great. the soba totto isn't quite the thing. and while sakagura looks great...it really seems very 'lots of small dishes' and more tapas. ..would happily take a few more restaurant names.

Riki or Gyu kaku? there are more on 50s, but a bit too far from grand cental.

i don't care for Sakagura myself, but it's prob what works best for this dinner/question...

      3. I am a big fan of Ise. There is one near GCS.

the 49th St branch closed because of building issues...

        2. Hane on 3 Av and 38th is a short walk from GCT.
Or Sushi Sen-Nin on E 33 St (a longer walk) is also good.

I think Nobu 57, or Blue Ribbon is a better choice than those mentioned above. Both are much better than Japonica. Both have many cooked dishes in addition to sushi.
If you were downtown, I'd recommend Takahachi, which is very much like Japonica, but they don't have yosenabi, which is the only thing I ever get at Japonica.
