Has anyone else had their avatar changed or created for you?

Has anyone else had their avatar changed or created for you in the last day or so?

  1. I think this new avatar generator only works on profiles that never had a custom avatar. Mine is still what it's always been.

    I think it's cute.

    1. I'm seeing irregularities w avatars. Macbook w Safari btw. In some cases I'm just seeing a lower case letter instead of an avatar. Fowler, there is a lowercase f in a tiny font where your avatar should be.

In SnackHappy's case below, the avatar is square (vs the newer round shape) and is so large that the text in the post overlaps the avatar.

On "My Profile" page, the avatars of folks who are reading me are in rows of decreasing size and are a mix of actual avatars and, lower case letters.

Breadcrumbs, I would try emptying your browser cache. I'm on a Macbook Pro with Safari 6.0.2 and it works fine for me.

        1. re: SnackHappy

Thanks SnackHappy, I cleared my cache but that didn't seem to make a difference.

          Here's what I'm seeing

          1. re: Breadcrumbs

Oh boy, this is beyond my very limited expertise. How about logging out and logging back in?

            1. re: SnackHappy

Thanks for trying to help me SnackHappy. I tried your suggestion but no luck so I re-booted but that didn't help either. I guess I'll just wait to see if CH has any suggestions.

            2. re: Breadcrumbs

Well that's definitely not right. Are you seeing the weird avatars in any other browser, or just that version of Safari?

              1. re: Engineering

The avatar is covering up the first word of the sentence. It's kind of a problem .Is this going to continue?

                1. re: emglow101

All's well when I log in on one PC, but the other gives me grief -- tiny lower case letter with no box, and custom avatars overlapping the user's screen names so they are more or less unreadable. People I'm Reading etc is FUBARed, just a long vertical row of gibberish. Using IE 8 in the latter case which may be the problem.

            1. re: kpzoo

I could be mistaken kpzoo, but it appears from the time stamp that annoucement was made AFTER my question.

              1. re: Fowler

Nevertheless, it does answer your question.

                1. re: SnackHappy

How so, SnackHappy? My question was, and I quote:

"Has anyone else had their avatar changed or created for you in the last day or so?"

                  1. re: Fowler

Well, it brings some light to the discussion. But I can see where this is going so I'll just drop it and move along.

            2. What's with the capital letter avatars? F M W etc....

They look to be the first letter of the poster's id for those with no avavatar. Why is this better than everyone who doesn't have one having the same one?

                1. re: TroyTempest

Scratching head over the design ideas that get attention around here....avatar redesigns? why....

                  1. re: HillJ

HillJ, in my part of the country, taxpayer dollars are being spent to change ALL the existing street signs from uppercase lettering to lowercase lettering. The reasoning behind this we're
being told, is that lowercase lettering is just easier to read. Here at Chowhound, the old avatars were just fine. The new "assigned" avatars make threads look too busy IMO. I think that the old scattering of knife and fork avatars were actually necessary to keep things somewhat tame and monochromatic within threads.

                    1. re: Cheese Boy

Right. And it was easy to tell that you needed to get a custom avatar. Now it is like, well chowhound created a custom avatar for you.
                      Scratching my head, too.

                      1. re: Cheese Boy

This is actually a Federal mandate (by the Bush admin, no less). And of course the Feds aren't providing any additional transportation funding to do it.
