new upscale London Chinese restaurants like Bo and HKK
I have noticed that several new upscale (very expensive) Chinese restaurants have recently opened in London including Bo and HKK. If you have eaten at any of these restaurants, I would love to hear what you think of them including, for example, how you think they compare to Kai.
I've held off posting on here of late as the work PC uses Internet explorer 6 (tight wads) which does not work well with chowhound now! However since there's no response to this q I thought I'd make the effort :-).
I was at HKK a few weeks ago. It feels like a hotel restaurant, big, clinical, lots of staff both front of house and in the kitchen and is impeccably presented.
There is no menu, you are given the food and then provided with a menu as a reminder at the end which was presented to us by the head chef.
The food is without doubt a level above any Chinese food that I've had. There is a fine dining take on Chinese dishes that means that some may want to class it as fusion in some of it dishes. We had 13 dishes the day that we were there and there wasn't a single one that I thought was bad. The worst probably being a lobster claw presented on noodles in a sauce that took me back to the days when I was a student with pot noodles! If you want further details on the dishes I’ll happily post them here.
The problem for me was that over the course of the meal, there were really only 1 or 2 dishes that really stood out, one of which was a superb crispy duck (presented as a normal crispy duck in pancake would come), which - to me anyway - is not enough when you're paying £90 pp for food alone.
The one thing that I would highly recommend is the matched non alcoholic drinks pairing. This was interesting and definitely different; some real thought had been put into it. This is particularly in contrast to the wine list which was pretty dull and very pricey by the glass and they also did the hated thing of upon being given a budget to work to the sommelier and then automatically upsells by over 20% (£60 limit to £75 wine so they should have decent wines up to the £60 limit imo).
HKK definitely adds something to London market and produces excellent food. If money is no object then you'll be happily served some beautiful Chinese food. In contrast to the meal that I ate at Hedone the previous week for the same price I - who doesn’t have a limitless budget! – know where I’d prefer to eat.
I'd be really interested to hear too. From what I've read HKK seems to have got universal acclaim and is a step up from anything else in London.
Bo London doesn't really appeal, seems to me a dated case of style over substance which might be unfair but I'm not willing to risk £310 before drinks to find out.
