Cafe 56 (Middletown, CT)
Ready for one of the best sandwiches in Middletown? I meant to get here much sooner, but finally ran over for takeout lunch yesterday to try the El Mexicano "Tacandwich"--"roasted, achiote-marinated chicken, green citrus slaw, avocado, salsa fresca and our signature chilera sauce." Comes with thickly sliced housemade chips. I'm not usually a chip person, but I ate every last one. Deliciousness all the way around.
What's a tacandwich? Here's their definition:
Tacandwich n. (ta cand witch) – A combination of Latin American taco fillings served in a Portuguese roll, giving you the great flavors of the tacos you love with the convenience of a sandwich.
And let me tell you something, it's a winning combo. I'd love to know where they get their Portuguese rolls. I have never eaten a better one.
I had my eye on some fine-looking empanadas (along with a variety of baked goods on the counter). I'll be back again soon.
OOPS! No, not tomorrow! Closed on Sunday!
I'm pasting the days and hours from googling:
Monday 7:00 am – 2:30 pm
Tuesday 7:00 am – 2:30 pm
Wednesday 7:00 am – 2:30 pm
Thursday 7:00 am – 2:30 pm
Friday 7:00 am – 2:30 pm
Saturday 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
We were there for the first time yesterday. Had the Argentine, Baja, and the empanada special with a side of tostada. Everything was delicious. Very attentive service. Topped it off with one of their desserts, also delicious. My only problem is that my daughter will be graduating in May so my trips to Middletown will come to an end.
I said I'd love to know where they get their Portuguese rolls--well, today I found out! They make them in house! No wonder I've never tasted a better one. They're EXCELLENT!
Gawd, I love this place. Try the Cubano! Ask for extra napkins. :)
P.S. You can park for an hour for free in the lot across the street and on the weekend, it's just free, period. Just go easy and watch out for the potholes.
Wow! Once again, thankyou Kattyeyes for a great recommendation! This place is hopping. Apparently, if you go once you cannot help but to become a regular. I had the baja tacandwich and it was chock full of zesty flavors creating a party in my mouth. A bit messy and required a fork and knife. The shrimp, the slaw, everything was delightfully seasoned. I cannot wait to get back and try everything on the menu. A true treasure for Middletown.
"Apparently, if you go once you cannot help but to become a regular." I agree completely. And extra napkins are a must with any tacandwich, I think.
Thank BiscuitBoy, by the way--credit where due, I started going on his recommendation. :)
Last time I went, the chef had just finished making some hot sauce and asked me if I wanted to try it. Where else does this happen?
