Bulk Spices in Portland, ME

Where is the best place to buy spices in bulk in or around Portland, ME. I would prefer to fill my empty spice jars, rather than having to buy new jars.

I'm not looking for anything gourmet here, just every day chili, paprika, maybe a few curries; that type of thing.

Whole Foods is often my go to place for by-the-pound items, but I don't think Whole Foods does spices in bulk, only jars. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Any other suggestions?

  1. Easy ride up to Yarmouth/Freeport for Royal River Natural Food on Route 1 (Exit 17, take a right by Big Eartha)or the first Freeport exit (Take a right at the light). Have a good selection of Frontier Spices by weight. Also some local spice blends.

    1. Micucci's has a pretty nice selection of bulk spices, upstairs past the wine section.

Does Miccuci's have an option to buy by weight? Or do they just sell larger containers?

I believe it's just large containers but at good prices.

      2. Whole Foods does sell spices in bulk. They're in the same aisle as the other bulk items.

        Micucci's has commercial-size spice containers, but I don't think they offer a by-the-pound option.

        1. Hannaford actually has bulk spices too. I haven't compared their prices to Whole Foods, but I'd guess they're cheaper.

Which Hannaford location are you referring to?

Forest Ave. The bulk stuff is between produce and the bakery, and the spices are on the back (bakery) side.

Yes! I actually found this today while I was in that store. I've never bothered to venture over to the back side of that kiosk, but there they were.

If I read the label correctly they are Frontier spices. Got some curry and paprika, I'll use them soon and report back if any surprises in quality.

          2. You may also want to check out Penzey's Spices, online and based in Milwaukee. You can purchase bags of spices in addition to jars, and the quality has never disappointed.
