Pride & Joy - - PART II

My first excursion to Myron Mixon's Pride & Joy BBQ wasn't the very best.....ribs were quite good.....wings and chicken....not so much.....But realizing that presenting BBQ in a restaurant is a great challenge....i went back for Part II on Thursday evening......

Since I was disappointed with the wings and the chicken from the first go-round.....(as these hadn't seen the inside of an actual wood-burning smoker).....I decided to go another route this time around......

I arrived at 7.....when a BBQ restaurant should have their best product smoked and ready to go.....I ordered their 8-oz. brisket sandwich and a side of slaw.....The brisket came in a basket.....with a decent pile of brisket and 2 slices of thick, nice bread.....I looked at the brisket closely and it had a very slight pink smoke ring.....But I placed the brsket up to my nose and no smoke smell whatsoever......From there....I went to the small piece of fat on the underside of the meat....and no smoke smell or taste there.....To be fair...it was hot and the texture was as expected.....But I tasted the brisket....and it tasted as if it spent a small amount of time on the smoker....and then was finished in a pan in the oven.....That's what it looked, smelled and tasted like.....

From there....I built my own sandwich.....piling the brisket on the bread.....adding a moderate amount of the cole slaw on top.....and a bit of BBQ sauce on top....building a traditional, southern BBQ sandwich....I did add some of their tangy BBQ sauce as well.....(their sauces and slaw are very good)......

The sandwich that I built was edible....But for the $21 that I spent on an 8 oz. sandwich, slaw and Diet Coke....my expectations weren't met.....Certainly not I was hoping for from a BBQ restaurnat with Myron Mixon's name and likeness on it.....Disappointment Part II.....

I noticed the liquor was missing from the bar area and the bartended said they weren't serving alcohol "temporarily"......I don' tknow what that means....but I don't that's a good sign.....

Would say that had a reasonbly decent crowd there for a Thursday evening in a sketchy area of town.....Then again....I haven't seen any advertising for this place either.....Miami needs a great BBQ place....A great destination....But I'm curious to know if the folks here know what BBQ here is beyond Shorty's and Caja China....

This has the makings of a very, very expensive restaurant funeral....The servers there are exceedingly nice and cordial....and believe and espouse what they've been taught.....

Let's hope......

I still say they have priced themselves out of business from the very start, regardless of how good the Q and sides could be.

I recently read a quote, don't recall from whom, that if your best compliment is for the sauce, it's not good bbq. I've likewise tried Pride & Joy twice and have not had anything that resembles good bbq.

Like you, I couldn't get any aroma or flavor of smoke from the brisket or any other meats for that matter (I've also tried the pulled pork and the baby backs). Very faint smoke ring, but I understand that can be faked with curing salt - and last visit, I noticed the brisket only had a "smoke ring" on one side? The baby backs were OK but tasted more like Chinese char siu than anything else. The "cupcake chicken" was awful.

The room's got a fun honkytonk feel, the servers are indeed incredibly nice, the beer list is solid ... and some of the sauces are pretty good.

Four of us went to Pride and Joy last night after Happy Hour drinks at Bloom (across the street) and before the movie at O Cinema (around the corner). It wasn't as bad as I expected after all the terrible reviews and the patio seating was pleasant enough. Service was good too. The BBQ St Louis Ribs and Brisket-not so much- but the fried chicken, potato salad and draft beers were all very good.

I don't think we're giving the place terrible reviews.....It's just the expectation level is high....and the quality they're serving isn't matching the expectation......The food they serve is edible....not outstanding....that's all....We all want this place to serve great BBQ....and they're not....that's the bottom line.....

And as FD pointed out....the place is expensive.....I'm the type that really doesn't care what it costs....as long as its good....And well...it's not that good.....

If Myron Mixon's name is one it.....it should be really, really good...and it's not happening there....

I agree, there's not anything posted about it being terribly bad. But when the fried chicken is described as being much better than the ribs or brisket of a king of BBQ championships's restaurant, there is something fundamentally wrong.

You're exactly right.....FD!.....When folks are talking about the fried chicken....mac-n-cheese.....and the sides.....and NOT the BBQ'd meat....then Houston....we have a problem....

Its for that reason that I've also mentioned Sparky's and Brother Jimmy's......both of them are serving way better BBQ than Pride & Joy.....period....end of story......

And the fact they're not serving alcohol....lends itself to a licensing issue....This has the makings of a very expensive restaurant funeral.....And as mentioned....the parking there is atrocious....and while I don't think its a dangerous neighborhood....you wouldn't want your wife, mother or significant other walking those sidestreets after dark.....That is an issue....Hell...having to pay to park in front is heinous in that neighborhood!
