No, or little smoke wok seasoning
I have just bought a 12 inch wok to assist my college life. I am planning on seasoning it; however, most of the method I have seen will create tons of smoke, that will probably trigger the dorm' kitchen fire alarm. My dorm' alarm is annoyingly lousy, and once it start "singing", there is no way to silent it and to stop the incoming firemen troops nearby. As a result, it is quite embarrassing and annoying if I trigger the alarm.
Back to the real business, is there any way to season a wok without creating clouds of smoke? My dorm' kitchen has an oven (im not sure if its working or not) and an electric stove. If you are suggesting the oven method, then an instruction link would be nice, and please tell me the amount of smoke. BTW, my wok has a wooden handle that cannot be taken off, and I do not have any aluminum foil at the moment, so please also tell me how to safely cover the handle.
PS: Is it okay if one completely ignore the initial seasoning? From what I have read, wok seasoning is a gradual and continuous process of using the wok, so is it okay if I just start cooking immediately? This one is just out of my curiosity, I definitely want to season a wok.
Thank you very much. Sorry for the long post and for asking so many questions.
I do not do the super-hot smokey way of seasoning, so no worries about your wooden handle or smoke.
Oil your handle with mineral oil if you have it. Wrap a wet dishtowel around the handle, secure with kitchen twine. Apply thin layer of oil or other fat (I use Crisco but I don't think it matters) with a paper towel. Put into a 250 degree oven for an hour. Check if your towel on the handle is still wet. Turn off oven and return wok to it for another hour.
Find a BBQ and do it outside?
To avoid burning the wood handles, I'd make a real hot fire (coals), but with a small hot spot, then swirl the oil around in the wok over the hot spot, building up blackness, in small areas on the wok surface, but avoiding the handles. Get some Ove Gloves, or welding gloves to do this.
This is going to smoke, but is fast and fun.
But there are other ways that may better suite your immediate needs.
