Trader Joe's Opening in Amherst - 2013

It's official, Trader Joe's is opening up in Amherst, NY:

http://www.wgrz.com/news/article/1954...

I have only been to one Trader's Joes, when I was in Detroit recently but I enjoyed the shopping experience. Living in the Toronto area I was hoping they would at least open on in a more northern section of NY state.

Maybe not a big deal for most of the people in this forum but it is pretty exciting news for me and I am sure other Canadians too.

I will definitely check it out when there! Great news for cross-border shoppers from TO!

Also wondering when it is opening. No date on the website yet and there is another location opening up in March that is listed so I am guessing it won't be opening up in March. No march break shopping there :(

I always want to reply to the Canadian posts for where to find x, y, and z... and then I'm like d'oh, no TJs!

Between that and the Wegmans nearby I'm real happy. :)

What are your favourite "must get" items at Wegmans?

Oh man, Wegmans just rocks. I love the one right near Boulevard Mall.

                  Things I love:

Their Placek Coffee Cake, in the bread/dessert section. It's kind of like a sweet raisin brioche crumble bread..... so good, very different). All their bread is great actually.

Wegmans brand pork/apple sausage wheel. Again, any of their sausage wheels are great, really.

I love any Yancey's Fancy cheese, which are not available in every state. I love the Buffalo Wing Cheddar and also the Roasted Garlic. Also Cabot brand Tuscan Cheddar or Tomato Basil Cheddar are really good. Also harder to find, not in every US grocer. The Yancey's Fancy cheeses are located with the fancier cheeses, and the Cabot cheeses are located with the everyday cheeses, not with the fancier ones.

Also, try Town House Flip Sides crackers - Garlic & Herb variety. Those are delish.

The Boulevard Mall location also has a market type eatery, kind of like Movenpick but obviously much better. They have a sub/hoagie place that I really like. Lots of places to sit and eat. Not sure if every Wegmans has this.

Really, you'll be like a kid in a candy store there. I spend hours there. Just stuff we simply don't have.

Wow! Great, detailed, entertaining reply! I will check it out for sure. Just wondering how much cheese I can bring back across the border.

No idea how much we are allowed. I bring what I bring, if they want to take it, fine.

                      I wish you good travels!

It would be nice if they'd acknowledge the area north of Hartsdale and south of Albany! The northern half of Westchester doesn't have a store, either. I end up going to Danbury (which now has TJ and Whole Foods!).

I checked out the Trader Joe's a few weeks ago when I was in the Buffalo area. I actually made two visits. I was very impressed with selection, price and service.

Some things we tried and loved:

                Caramelized Onion Dip
                Truffle-Mushroom Triangoli
Speculoos Cookie butter (original and the one with chocolate)
                Cowboy Bark
Santa Fe Salad (prepared foods section)
Thai peanut salad with chicken (prepared foods)
Habenero hot sauce (hubby tried and loved)
                Trader Joe's Root Beer
                Cilantro Salad Dressing

We still have more things to try. Will report later.

I've been to quite a few Trader Joe's. I pretty much love them all.

The Amherst one might be my favourite of all the ones I've been to. They did a great job and the staff is superb.

TeacherFoodie, I recall you talking about Paula's too. Would be interested to read your thoughts in whatever thread that was mentioned in. :-)

I didn't make it to Paula's this visit - but in the summer I really enjoyed a Coconut Cream - delicious!

I am hoping to make it back before baby arrives but that's probably not realistic so not sure when I'll get there again. Last night I tried a dark chocolate peanut butter cup from the package I got at Trader Joe's. They are in my pantry cupboard in the basement and if I want them to last they will have to stay there. So, so good!

The dark chocolate peanut butter cups are amazing. Probably my favourite of all TJ's products. That's great that you love them too! Nice.

Good luck with your upcoming little one :)
