Trader Joe's Opening in Amherst - 2013

It's official, Trader Joe's is opening up in Amherst, NY:

I have only been to one Trader's Joes, when I was in Detroit recently but I enjoyed the shopping experience. Living in the Toronto area I was hoping they would at least open on in a more northern section of NY state.

Maybe not a big deal for most of the people in this forum but it is pretty exciting news for me and I am sure other Canadians too.

  1. I will definitely check it out when there! Great news for cross-border shoppers from TO!

    1. Any news about when it is opening?

Also wondering when it is opening. No date on the website yet and there is another location opening up in March that is listed so I am guessing it won't be opening up in March. No march break shopping there :(

      2. I always want to reply to the Canadian posts for where to find x, y, and z... and then I'm like d'oh, no TJs!

I know, that's why I'm excited for all those relatively close to Amherst, NY!

Between that and the Wegmans nearby I'm real happy. :)

What are your favourite "must get" items at Wegmans?

                1. re: TeacherFoodie

Oh man, Wegmans just rocks. I love the one right near Boulevard Mall.

                  Things I love:

Their Placek Coffee Cake, in the bread/dessert section. It's kind of like a sweet raisin brioche crumble bread..... so good, very different). All their bread is great actually.

Wegmans brand pork/apple sausage wheel. Again, any of their sausage wheels are great, really.

I love any Yancey's Fancy cheese, which are not available in every state. I love the Buffalo Wing Cheddar and also the Roasted Garlic. Also Cabot brand Tuscan Cheddar or Tomato Basil Cheddar are really good. Also harder to find, not in every US grocer. The Yancey's Fancy cheeses are located with the fancier cheeses, and the Cabot cheeses are located with the everyday cheeses, not with the fancier ones.

Also, try Town House Flip Sides crackers - Garlic & Herb variety. Those are delish.

The Boulevard Mall location also has a market type eatery, kind of like Movenpick but obviously much better. They have a sub/hoagie place that I really like. Lots of places to sit and eat. Not sure if every Wegmans has this.

Really, you'll be like a kid in a candy store there. I spend hours there. Just stuff we simply don't have.

Wow! Great, detailed, entertaining reply! I will check it out for sure. Just wondering how much cheese I can bring back across the border.

No idea how much we are allowed. I bring what I bring, if they want to take it, fine.

                      I wish you good travels!

Thanks - this will help next time I'm stocking up at Premier Gourmet. Finally made it to the new location - loved it.

          2. Anyone in the area have an update on how construction is going? Curious when the opening date might me

Thanks for TeacherFoodie for posting this on another thread:

            1. Geez, I wish they would put one in Dutchess or Orange county!

It would be nice if they'd acknowledge the area north of Hartsdale and south of Albany! The northern half of Westchester doesn't have a store, either. I end up going to Danbury (which now has TJ and Whole Foods!).
