Smokey Mountains in Fall Suggestions, etc.

My family and I plan a trip to the Great Smokey Mountains this fall - there will be 11 adults and possibly 3 dogs. None of us have ever stayed anywhere in Tennesse, so have lots of questions. Can you suggest:

1. Places to stay prefer cabin with a view
2. Places to eat
3. Places to visit

Thanks for any and all suggestions. I have gotten information by Googling, but thought getting some information from those with first-hand knowledge would be beneficial.

Thanks in advance.

  1. For where to stay, you might want to check some University of Tennessee sports forums as that sort of thing gets lots of coverage for fall football. You might also choose a football or NOT football weekend.

Now about where to eat: This year that's a really hard question. First, the economy is tough and several places have already closed. Some more will doubtless open for the summer rush. The thing that will require your continued vigilance, though, is planning around US 411. US 411, the only road over to Cherokee (the casino AND the Indian Village) is closed due to a land slide, except the problem isn't rocks on the road, it's a football sized landslide that dropped the entire highway down the mountain and rebuilding is going to be a problem. Likewise the Cherohala Skyway just beyond the south western end of the Smokies is closed by a landslide.

If you like crowds and outlet shopping, stay in Pigeon Forge. If you want the quiet side of the Smokies, the Town of Townsend to the southwest is better for a quiet restful time.

Restaurants are chains, some local and a few (Blackberry Farm- a resort+ restaurant) wildly pricey .

The Smokies are there for the millenia. You can choose to pick up picnics at well stocked groceries and walk trails and enjoy waterfalls and vistas and (unheard of in these times) quiet.

History going back to the founding of the country can include trips to Fort Loudon, Red Clay park (and in those parts a stop at Benton Hams just north of Madisonville and then a zig over to Sweetwater Valley Cheese south of Loudon.)

    What are your adults' interests?

Thanks, Shallots, for the info. This is the first I had about the landslides.

We range in age from 73 to 19 so there is a varied age range. Most of us want the piece and quiet and beauty. Some of the younger ones would like to be close enough to places that offer various forms of entertainment. We would like a cabin with television, WiFi, internet, a pool table and foosball table, a deck with great views and a hot tub for us older ones. A nearby place for fishing would also be nice.

I have been thinking about the possibility of going through a realtor for this. Do you happen to have suggestions for some good realtors?

      1. re: Wtg2Retire

I'd suggest the Scout board for Tennessee Football. I think there's a realtor on there. If any of you are college football fans, you'd really enjoy a football game in Neyland Stadium and having a meal before the game at Calhoun's on the River, very close to the stadium.

Bicyclists should bring their bikes and take advantage of the day that Cades Cove is closed to car traffic.

Maryville, not that far from Tounsend has lots of opportunites for eathing out, a few very upscale. (Wait for summer reviews to come in, staffs can change markedly in a year.)

    2. Folks, a reminder that discussion of places to stay and tourist attractions are off topic for Chowhound, so please keep your responses food-focused. Thanks!

        Thanks for the responses.

To Chowhound Team: I was unaware that these topics could not be a subject of query. Lesson learned.
