Sonora Taqueria & La Tarte Bakery (San Rafael)

Sonora Taqueria & La Tarte Bakery are two different places, a taqueria and a Russian bakery, in Terra Linda (north San Rafael), in the same complex of businesses as Scotty's Market.

I had a late lunch today at Sonora Taqueria. First came chips (good, not special) with two excellent salsas made by the owner; really good. Then my tacos - Carne Asada and Al Pastor ($2.59 each) - arrived. They were large and excellent; the sauce on them was so good I didn't add any salsa. it's a taqueria in a small Mexican market. I'll be back.

A few doors away and set back is La Tarte Bakery, owned by a very pleasant Russian woman. I had three pastries (two shortbread-based and one almond) and they were wonderful. I took home a beef piroshki. She remembers House of Piroshki in SF on Irving, which she said deep fried their version in contrast to her baked-and-healthier version. Unhealthy wins :-( This is a high-quality Russian bakery that merits a trip off 101.

Thanks for the tip - good to know for when I'm in the area.

Stopped in again at La Tarte Bakery, set back from the row of shops in this complex. More cookies eaten immediately, and a beef piroshki to take home which I just finished. The cookies were again excellent (shortbread based) and the piroshki ($3.50) was also fine, probably as good as a baked-instead-of-deep-fried one can get.

La Tarte was closed today (Thursday), and I later read in the San Rafael Patch that this mostly-wholesale bakery is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
