Buttonwood Manor in Matawan sold?

Drove past yesterday & saw a sign that says "closed for renovations". Rumor has it it's been sold to the people who own MJ's pizza in Middletown.

  1. You have got to be kidding me!! Word was that it has been for sale for the better part of 10 years now.......but gosh don't tell me another MJ's? Really?

Look I love seen people succeed especially having been a business owner entrepreneur my entire life. But for the life of me I don't see the public's love affair with MJ's? I guess it's just me because they keep popping locations up and they seem to be doing well.........but I for one don't get it. That's a hell of a location to turn into a pizza bar now. WOW......

We've never been to the other MJs, but will probably check this one out since it's very close to where I live.

    2. Has anyone been to an MJs that can speak to the quality? The menu looks like it has something for everyone.

I can't imagine they would convert a catering / reception venue to a pizza/grill! But if you consider the area - Cafe 34 has managed to do a steady business in a small noisy venue.

I have been to the other MJ's location in Tinton Falls, the old Grist Mill. Their pizza's are pretty solid, other menu items are hit or miss. It was pretty much the crowd that turned me off. They were doing a lot of "Theme" nights, karaoke, open mic etc. It was more a college crowd party atmosphere than a martini sipping environment that finally turned me off of the place. My judgments aside, they have turned two other "loser" locations into winners, so they are doing something right.

It's not the whole restaurant, just the upstairs that will be MJs. The Buttonwood still exists. I heard that the opening is within the next couple of weeks.

Yes, the people that own the MJs restaurant have bought the Buttonwood manor. I frequent the MJs in Middletown about once a month and agree with JRVEDIVICI, it is hit or miss. My wife enjoys their pizzas very much, but last time she was disappointed with the quality of her pizza. Ingredients did not seem fresh. I have enjoyed their fish taco and hamburgers, but also on the same day my wife had a lousy pizza, I had a lousy burger. This comes after a previous visit when I had a special burger offering called a "Cowboy burger" that was fantastic. I go to the Middletown location because it is convenient to my house, the food is generally pretty good, and the prices are fair.
