Bulk spices?

Nikki NYC Jan 14, 2013 04:49 AM

I just got a great cookbook by Lévana Kirschenbaum. She has a recipe for a rub that calls for large amounts of spices. Is there any place in lower Fairfield County that carries spices in bulk? I already tried Penzey's with no luck. I am so excited to try this rub!

Have you got any Indian grocery shops nearby? I think that would be your best bet. Asian supermarkets might be worth a look as well.

Are you willing to shop online for spices? The Spice House carries tons of spices, some in larger size jars/bags.

Health food stores usually have spices in bulk. Just buy what you need of each spice.

Not sure what you mean about no luck with Penzey's-- isn't that what they *do*? I've only ordered online from them, not gone to a retail store though. What were they missing?

Penzey's sells many of their spices in 8 oz and 1 lb bags. You may not find the bulk packages in all their stores, but you can order online:

The Spice Mill in Manchester, CT sells in massive quantities (they service the restaurant industry as well as selling retail to the public). While located in greater Hartford, they sell online too. I have been buying spices there for years. Good selection and fresh stuff:

If you live nears WHOLE FOOD, you can find bulk spices there.
