Nobu

Well, I guess I am not much of an elitist because I went out tonight for Restaurant Week. My decision process involved lots of conditions: likely not too crowded or noisy, good alternative involving fish or seafood(my husband prefers fish or seafood), restaurant menu choices which I cannot really prepare at home, and a restaurant I have never been to before. Hence, Nobu. Far too expensive normally for my wallet. So I go in there with certain assumptions given the very high prices and its reputation in terms of clientele. I assume--very comfortable, probably luxurious, and polished, professional staff. Food--probably not stellar but at least very good. First, comfort--not. Hard, unpadded wooden chairs. Some half-booths with more comfortable seating for the lucky soul sitting in the booth part. Lighting and decoration--nice, romantic, not luxurious. Fake wood tables without tablecloths, etc. Noise level--ok, partly because it was only 1/3rd full. Distracting background music. Our waitstaff were very nice and provided quite decent service but were not polished or professional--cool busser with very visible prison tattoos...The food--extremely small portions, ok for the Restaurant Week price but if this is the size of the helpings on the regular menu, yikes! Tempura appetizer was really tasty. I had a plate of sushi. It was ok but a definite cut below Sushi Ota. My dessert--very interesting, very unusual (chestnut based) and, alas, very small. Overall--food was very good but overpriced.
