Ben and Izzy's Deli

Opening soon, I have high hopes for this place, anyone know who's doing it? The pic of the sandwich on their Twitter - https://twitter.com/benandizzys - looks pretty great.

      1. Looking forward to this too. I'm just up the street. Pancer's has been going downhill for years so there's really nothing close anymore. Hopefully this will fill the gap. Good luck to them.

          Question: Didn't the forrmer owner of Pancer's open up another deli around the Bathurst / Steeles area? Anyone try it?

                  Interesting that all the excitement about this place now seems to have come to a grinding halt. The last twitter post from Mr. Ben & Izzy was over a week ago and it says he was in Whistler, B.C. Wonder what's going on.

                    Yeah, it is like they started the "buzz" too soon ..

                      They actually just updated their Twitter (in response to this post, I wonder?) saying that they are "very, very, very close" to opening. They also posted a picture of the restaurant (which does look promisingly close to being ready).

                          Me too. Although pictures can be deceiving, the smoked meat in their pic looks amazing.

                          My mom, being the only one in my family who still keeps kosher (kind of - no meat out but fully kosher at home) is gonna do backflips. Even she wouldn't go to Marky's before it closed.

                              I gotta say, I'm with kwass. While I love seeded rye, for deli my perference is definitely seedless. But perhaps that's just me. And kwass.

                              The bread is more than an article. It's the makeup and lighting. It's important, Googs :)

                                  See. That's why there's chocolate and vanilla. One of the things that made me salivate was the caraway seed rye. Love that stuff.

                                    Sorry, but I do see the seeds. When you hate something, you can't help but be drawn to it, and I hate seeds in my rye bread.

                                      Don't get me wrong. I want fresh, plain, light rye with my smoked meat too not to mention regular mustard, no dijon. The meat speaks for itself and requires, to borrow from magic, just a cosmetic foundation on which to sit. Or to borrow my own analogy, if you don't like what the model is wearing, change it. She's still beautiful. It just wasn't the first thing that popped into my head. The first thing was *DAMN* I need a NAPkin.

                                        What caught my eye was the meat wasn't piled high enough. Needs a few more slices IMO.

                                          I think what's really been lost here is that if you're like me, and love caraway seed rye, like Magic (et al) and don't, or if you don't like rye at all, it's nice that (I assume) they'll have some options for you.

                                          Who knows, maybe that's just a prototype or all the bread they had there at the time of the photo.

                                            I actually love rye with caraway seeds - just not with deli.

                                            For me, I enjoy seedless fresh rye with deli all the way.

                                              Well a little "Bird" told me that your only bread option will be straight up rye. That pic was taken in a home kitchen and the only bread in the house was flax seed rye. So don't even concern yourself with the bread in the pic.

                                          1. Very excited about this. I work in the area and the lunch selection is very limited. Schwartz's is my fave but i know not to torment myself to use this as a benchmark. The sandwich picture has a very similar look and the hand cut is a happy thing. Not to be a stick in the mud but i concur that a light rye without seeds would be better. I hope there is a choice of breads. By the great look of the meat, i will take wonder if it is the only choice.

                                              Relax all you seed haters out there. They will have other bread options available. They just happened to use this one for the photo shoot.

                                                      I recall that I got ridiculed when I wrote that I brought my own rye bread for my first trip to Caplansky's.

                                              2. 16 posts about the bread already and the place isn't even open!!!

                                                Can I just make it much easier on everyone for when they do open - please just pick one of the following:

                                                a) Best sandwich ever! Beats Schwartz's and Caplansky's
                                                b) Better than Caplansky's but not as good as Schwartz's
                                                c) Better than Schwartz's but not as good as Caplansky's
                                                d) Schwartz's and Caplansky's are both much better

                                                If anyone likes, I can add Centre Street Deli to the choices.

                                                    It's actually in the perfect location, given that it's a Kosher Deli. It also fills the void left by Marky's. Not that Marky's was good towards the end, but it was the only Kosher Deli in the area.

                                                        3. Just an fyi to everyone, I drove by today and sad to say this place doesn't look anywhere close to opening. Half-papered windows and pretty empty inside. Patience!

                                                                    That looks crazy delicious, though I'll definitely be asking for mustard on the side when I go. Each picture they post looks more delicious than the last, but also seems to have more mustard than the last. I'd like some smoked meat with my mustard. ;)

                                                                          They were hoping for last Monday but a week out they knew that wasn't gonna happen. They said today would be more likely but it could still be a bit longer. For the most part, they're waiting on the DOH to sign off and issue a license.

                                                                            It sounds like if the DOH had gotten their act together, I could have had what I assume would have been a delicious sandwich when I stopped by on the weekend to see if they were open. Alas, I left hungry.

                                                                            I ended up going to Caplansky's though, and was quite happy.

                                                                        2. It should only be a couple more days.

                                                                          Keep in mind they won't be open from Friday nights until Sundays.

                                                                                      I guess opening a restaurant is more complicated than he realized. But I agree with you...he should stop saying "opening soon", and wait to say anything until he has a firm date.

                                                                                          I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Mr's Ben & Izzy. With all the hype, this might be the first deli to need a bouncer. At least stanchions & rope and a number dispenser located OUTside the front door.

                                                                                  1. Guessing this place is opened now seeing some reviews online at the typical review sites Yelp and Urbanspoon.

                                                                                    Can't wait to try them and compare it to Smoke Meat Pete which I finally tried over the long weekend.

                                                                                      Personally, the reviews there have me waiting to try them.

                                                                                    2. I finally tried it last friday and I have to say, they make a good pastrami. It was nicely spiced, smokey and appeared to be hand cut.
                                                                                      It was a tad pricey, but I would go back if I was in the area.
