Red Lantern or Gaslight for dinner on Saturday night.

Which has better food, ambiance and is more lively.

I think more lively would be Red Lantern, but food goes to Gas Light. I still think Red Lantern is too pricey, though tasty.

I have friends in the service industry who love the red lantern. There are plenty of good places in Boston which do well with smaller parties but not larger ones.
Stanhope street has always been home to some unusual but good restaurants, dating back to Satch's and Jason's up on the Claredon street corner.

I would pick Gaslight every time Gaslight is plenty lively and an actual restaurant, where Red Lantern is a nightclub (and clip joint) masquerading as a restaurant.

The service was laughable the one time we dined at Red lantern. We had a large party and the waiter was bringing dishes which no one had ordered to one end of the table and lying, telling them the other end of the table had ordered for them. We found them grossly overcharging on the #s of rounds of drinks. The manager offered a free round of crappy desert wine to accomodate for this. It took a lot of debate to get the bill appropriately adjusted.

Gaslight is sort of like a scene out of Midnight in Paris.

Red Lantern is sort of like a scene out of Big Trouble in Little China.

Red Lantern can be sort of a cougar scene, but I've only been twice.

Yeah, I should clarify...I loved BTinLC - just depends on what you're looking for.

I went to Red Lantern last year and thought it was weird. Everything about it. The staff, the menu, the scene. While maybe it is a cougar thing I thought it was a bunch of 20 somethings drinking a modern version of a scorpian bowl. We went with another couple and the menu was not like you could get your own dinner. For example I got a fried rice dish and that was an entree and it was like eating a big bowl of rice and that is it. There are so many other great choices in Boston and that one you can leave off your list.

            Definitely Gaslight.

Well you definitely have deterred me from Red Lantern, maybe I will just pop in there for a drink before Gaslight.

They are really different so it's hard to compare.

For my money, just about any place has a "better ambiance" than Red Lantern (I find it really, really tacky) though I don't think the food is bad and it's certainly lively.

I like Gaslight, but it's nothing like Red Lantern.
