An unexpectedly great burger at The Library at The Public Theater
As some may be aware, the Public Theater on Lafayette St. has recently undergone an extensive restoration, including the creation of a great (appearance wise; I haven't tried their food) cafe in the lobby. and a beautiful new restaurant, The Library, on the second floor. A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I wandered in to have a look around. A portion of the room was cordoned off for a private party, but as my wife and I were milling about, one of the waitstaff came by and offered us a slider. It was delicious! So tonight we decided to try it for dinner. My wife had, and loved, the shrimp tacos. I ordered the burger, and it was one of the better burgers I've had in NYC: beefy, juicy, and properly cooked (I ordered it medium, and it came out real medium -- i.e., still some pink in the center). I didn't sample the fries -- I was trying to be a little bit good, so I subbed in a salad, which they happily did. It's a little pricey: the burger is $18, with cheese and bacon (although, consistent with trying to be a little good, I had them hold the bacon). Definitely a repeat destination. And for those of you attending shows at Joe's Pub, a subset of The Library's menu (including the shrimp tacos and the burger) are available there, too.
