Recommendations please!

  • y

I will be traveling to Los Angeles next month and am looking for some restaurant recommendations.

For people from the SF area, I'm looking for something similar in ambiance/presentation to Bar Tartine, Abbott's Cellar, Foreign Cinema, Commonwealth, AQ, State Bird, etc. I basically like interesting/creative takes on farm-to-table ingredients in sleek spaces. I've been looking around but can't seem to really find anything to fit the bill. I've been to Animal and Son of a Gun, as well as ink, Scarpetta, Red Med, and the SBE ventures, but maybe something fresh has opened in the past year?

Dinner and brunch recommendations are what I am ideally looking for. Thanks!

        1. My favorite brunch in LA is at Malibu Canyon's Saddle Peak Lodge.

+1 for Fundamental-LA. A tiny place with wonderful food. Blink and you will miss it.

+2 on Fundamental... It's run by a bunch of NorCal guys, but despite that ;-), I'd still eat there in a hearbeat.

                1. Thanks for all of the suggestions! I forgot to mention that I have ripped Venice apart and was never really impressed with the food anywhere, though the interiors are just lovely. I'll definitely check out fundamental if I can!

If you don't mind my asking, why are you searching for coal when you are from Newcastle? IMHO, LA is just not as good as SF when it comes to places like you like - especially if you've tried Gjelina and Tasting Kitchen (what about MB Post? Tho' architecturally it is a bust, the food is quite good, but it won't be giving Bar Tartine a run for it's money)

What did you think of <<Animal and Son of a Gun, as well as ink, Scarpetta, Red Med, and the SBE ventures>>?

Our strong suits are Korean, Mexican, San Gabriel Type Chinese, Thai, etc.

                    Maybe try the new Spago?

I find the throw away line " I have ripped Venice apart and was never really impressed with the food anywhere," to be the end for my suggestions...

Good point. I guess, like Faulkner, within me still beats a heart that does not give up on my fellow man: "I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. "

                  2. I can definately recommend Bestia.

Ridiculously good food and very fresh. All cured salumi and meats are done in-house with an exceptional cocktails program and seasonal menu.

The cavatelli and sausage with black truffles is incredible!

                    1. Alma has a lot of buzz now.

                      1. salts cure. kind of my fave at the moment.

                        1. Providence
                          Drago Centro
                          Water Grill
                          Osteria Mozza
                          Tasting Kitchen

BTW, I don't care about interesting/creative takes or sleek spaces. So YMMMVMMV

                          1. heard that Lemonade was good. they just opened in westlake village.
