Moldly cornbread

So my SO pulled out some cornbread tonight and served me up a nice warm piece. However, it has a strange musty, mold-ish smell that I can't really describe. It looks normal and has no obvious discoloration but I imagine it's bad. Does cornbread go moldy or rancid? How soon does this usually happen?

Yup, just like regular bread. I've found that it gets moldier faster when the humidity's high, and if it's been left in the pan. The rancidness could come from the fat used in it - I make mine with vegetable shortening, but it it were made with butter, lard or bacon fat that could turn.

Yea, I guess I was surprised it went bad so quickly. Usually our bread lasts a good while on the counter, though I imagine the oil content is much higher than regular bread. Oh well...no cornbread for us tonight, will move on to the chocolate cake that desperately needs to be consumed.

Pulled it out? Was it freshly made? Four days old? Store bought? Any kind of fresh food can go bad if old or not stored properly.

Upon further questioning, he picked it up at Whole Foods...last week! I imagine that's enough time for it to go bad especially as we have no idea how long it had been sitting there. His mother was recently here and made a batch of cornbread just a few days ago which I assumed we were eating however apparently we already ate through that and he wanted more so pulled out the cornbread he had picked up last week.
