New gourmet market in Dobb's Ferry????

Developers are proposing to build the following on the 17.7-acre 4-parcel site located in the middle of Lawrence Street and Ogden, Livingstone and Stanley avenues:

18,000 sq. ft. gourmet market plus other assorted stores, restaurants,
a hotel, etc., etc.

Could this be Fairway or yet another Whole Foods?

  1. Rumor has it that it is a Mrs. Greens. Fairway said "no" b/c too close to Stew's.

Mrs. Greens' website now lists 50 Livingstone Ave in Dobbs Ferry as "coming soon".

Some on this board do not care for Mrs. G but I really like the new one in Tarrytown, they are upping their game here. They seem to be positioning themselves as a small, neighborhood Whole Foods. The one in T-town has a really nice butcher counter, deli, & produce, and I love the huge beauty product & supplement section downstairs. I also like the size, it's not an ordeal like going to WF but it's large enough to have what I want/need.

I just went to the mrs greens in hartsdale and was bummed that they didn't have dried coconut at a reasonable price. Huge store but more fancy than useful

Was there dried coconut at Trader Joe's? I really like that there is a Mrs. Green's, H-Mart and TJ's all right near each other. Makes for efficient destination shopping.

nope. Finally got some (of a different brand than the pricy stuff at the Hartsdale Mrs Greens) at the much smaller Briarcliff Mrs Greens. I'd been at the HMart, and maybe they have it there, but I couldn't find it. I've never had much luck asking for help there. And it was too early for the Indian market in Elmsford. Woe is me :)

One other thought (for future readers): how about middle eastern place at the northern end of Central Ave. Yaranusch (sp?)?

    2. No way it's Fairway or Whole Foods at only 18,000 square feet. Sounds like Mrs. Greens or Trader Joe's (although it's not clear they are expanding in Westchester and if they did, they should come up north first!).

Getting Mrs. Green's when it's advertised as a "gourmet market" has to be a major letdown.

(more speculation) Maybe another Amish Market, like Zeytinia in Croton or the market in Nyack (can't remember the name of the place offhand)?

Feh, Mrs. Green's. Not what I would call a gourmet market. More like a somewhat upscale natural foods store.

      2. Blame the NIMBY crowd that forced developers to reduce the size of the store. The original plan was to have a 55,000 sf store, but residents forced revisions and now the store will be only 18,000 sf. Instead of a shot at a Fairway or another top-notch supermarket we will get another mediocre Mrs. Greens--and, ironically, complaints about the absence of top-notch supermarkets coming from the same mouths of those "concerned" residents who fought the development.

Just curious: " ironically, complaints about the absence of top-notch supermarkets coming from the same mouths of those "concerned" residents who fought the development."
How is that you know that?

          1. re: Earl of Sandwich

Yes, and then they put in a high end movie theater and I believe I've read that people are now complaining that they wanted something more mainstream. It's even worse than the nonsense we have regarding Costco in Yorktown, which is STILL not approved.

          2. My father-in-law just visited and he drives up Route 9 from the TZ. He mentioned that a new market is moving into the closed Tarrytown Gourmet. I was intrigued, and I just googled and..... ACK yet another Mrs. Greens.

Yes, they're expanding since they got bought and did their renovations. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see them take over the Zeytina location. The store in Hartsdale is quite nice, even if they're very expensive.

Not in the old Zeytinia location. I'm not at liberty to say right now what's going in there, but it's not Mrs. Green's.

can you tell us whether we will be thrilled and excited when we know?

                  1. re: DGresh

I think we'll be pleased. That isn't meant as a tease--I just don't know enough to know more.

I promise I'll write more when I can!
