2013 Food and Restaurant OPENINGS

A tough time of year to open, but if a resto closes, then its space can become another boite.

Has anybody noticed any new diners or places to eat, to buy food, including new online services for delivery and/or food purchases.????

I was hoping it would be closer to Y&E oh well.

              2. Walked by the old Toko Bistro and Bar (637 Yonge Street at Isabella) which has signage indicating it's hiring and being replaced by another Japanese place: Aji Sai Resto and Lounge.

In the same stretch, the Red Bench has opened at 611 Yonge Street. Looks like a cute yogurt/make-your-own-cookie shop that offers tea and juices as well.

                1. The Works opened in the former Pizza Pizza space on Wellington & Church. They've been open around 2-3 weeks now.

                  1. Bazara, fusion sushi joint, opened on Ossington. The space was formerly occupied by Goed Eten.

Never heard of the chef Sam Yang. I am curious to see how this one is going to pan out.

                                  2. Posted this in the "Closed" thread earlier today by accident:

                                      1. So, the Congee 168 location (previously a Thai restaurant whose name excapes me) on Bathurst south of Wilson is now going to be an "Aristocrat BBQ". My spelling may be off, but it must be the same place on Wilson west of Bathurst.

Just looked it up, if it is the same place as on Wilson it is spelled - Aristokrat BBQ Restaurant

Doesn't sound so great according to Yelp reviews but thanks for the info.

                                        2. Gelato Pizza is opening at the corner of Eglinton and Avenue. I've never heard of them but the pics on their web page look good.

                                            1. re: Davwud

Interesting, I remember when they opened up the Queen West spot close to Boreal Gelato there was talk about them opening up other locations and typically near other gelato spots already existing. Not sure what is in this area though. I see they have a Queen east location opening soon too

                                              1. re: ylsf

I knew the name sounded familiar. I was just @ the Queen West location. I was walking by and went in to check it out. I didn't get anything, but the pizza looked amazing!!

                                              2. re: Davwud

A Gelato Pizza has been under construction on Queen East for over a year now. hmmm

                                                1. re: millygirl

Just read on Post City that Gelato Pizza has two new locations in the works. The location at 302 Eglinton West is opening this month, while the other at 1091 Queen East is opening next month.

                                              3. Since Main & Danforth is generally a dead zone save the blessed Bistro Camino and Grumbel's Deli, I'll add one. I saw a sign on the north side of Danforth very near the Len Duckworth's advertising that "Grillies" was coming soon. Not sure what it is, but the install looked professional. Seems to be a new fast food restaurant coming at us.

                                                1. In Oakville, walked by the old Jam today (downtown Oakville) and I saw a sign staying that Fin Izakaya is coming. Same as the spot at Yonge/Eglington http://www.finizakaya.com/

Funny that the sign said something like "japanese tapas" to describe what they were.... ha, mix of cultures indeed. I think this place has potential to do well though in the Oakville market. I am not sure how it is now but I seem to recall mixed reviews before for the place in Toronto.

                                                  1. Mother's Pizza is (re)opening its doors in Hamilton today.

I hope it's as good as the early years...I grew up around the corner from the original and it was a staple for everyone in the 'hood. Birthdays, graduations...everything.

Woods Restaurant going to take over Colborne Lane. Bruce Woods from Modus Ristorante and Robin Singh from Pravda. They are hoping for end of April launch

                                                            1. A little place called Just Hotdogs has opened two doors north of St. Clair on Dufferin (w/s).

Spoke with the owner this morning. He's been there 15 months but changed to dogs about 2 weeks ago. He's still getting his feet wet but plans on having chili, mushrooms, etc soon. Most things are home made but the dogs and sausages aren't. He's selling Natas as well from Palermo bakery.

Tiny place, a few stools at the front window counter is all. I think it looks promising.

More importantly, the coffee was really good -- lovely crema on the americano, dense foam on the cappuccino. A little pricey ($3.50 for a small capp, about 50 cents more than my local place) but I'm sure the rent/mortgage and maintenance on that location warrant it.

                                                                      2. They are located on Avenue road just north of Bloor. Spotted a Starbucks close by it that I had never seen before (not sure if the SB is a new location or relocated from close by).

Website says they will be open on Sundays in July and August

                                                                            2. I noticed that there will be a Toll House Cookies shop opening along the PATH, underneath Metro Hall.

Smells great. You can smell it 75 yards away. Products look really tasty. But I haven't tried anything yet.

                                                                                1. Looks like a place called Forest Hill Pizza will be opening at Bathurst/Eglinton. Couple storefronts away from House of Chan.

It's run by an engaged couple w/ the man in the back and his fiancee up front. The interior is bright with salsa and merengue music playing quietly in the background.

The food is pure comfort. It's like eating at your Dominican friend's house. Nothing ground breaking or haute about it, it's good, solid food. We tried sancocho, platanos, and chuletas w/ moro de gandules. Everything was good, nothing was over-salted and the portions were filling. As for the prices, two of us got out of there for $40 including tip and soft drinks. You could easily spend under $10 and still be full.

Given the challenges they have had at what is supposed to be the new loaction on Queen near the DVP it may have come back on the table but I haven't heard it.

From the timing (first of the month etc.) I'd guess it's a lease expiry rather than a non-payment of rent situation.

                                                                                                                                            1. re: bytepusher

Both Playpen's site confirms that the Real Jerk will be taking over, and Real Jerk's site states that opening night will be in October 2013.

Ed (the owner) saw me and motioned to come in. We talked a bit and I asked when he plans to open, he said either the 24 or 25 of September.

I live close by, so went in for lunch. It is poorly set up with the drinks on the opposite side from where you order your food and the garbage/recycling at the back of the restaurant rather than on your way out.

I ordered the lamb sandwich and my wife ordered the balsamic chicken sandwich. After waiting a longer time than it should take to make 2 sandwiches, the person behind us got their sandwich before us and the girl at the counter had to confirm that the kitchen got our order. There was no one ahead of us BTW.

The sandwiches both had a lack of taste. The lamb sandwich tasted dry and the bread didn't taste fresh. The balsamic vinegar was dripping all over he chicken sandwich. I never thought I'd recommend Subway over another sandwich place, but you are better off walking a few doors down to get a tastier and cheaper sandwich there.

                                                                                                                                                    1. re: Naban82

Without knowing what the person behind you ordered, also hard to know if getting theirs before yours makes sense. Did you have cooked and they prepared?

What hours they are fully open is still slightly a mystery.

I was just on their facebook page and they serve chicken and waffles for brunch. I guess I know where I'm going on Sunday :)

The influences were pretty light in some of the dishes, I'm imagining a more concertedly Cajun/Creole focus in the new menu, but having not seen it, that's just speculation on my part.

The lunch special was fried chicken and french toast, which was delicious. Juicy, tender fried chicken with a very light floury coating on it. Not everyone's favorite style, I don't think, but I liked it.

Plus, it arrived in a timely manner, which had been much of my issue with the restaurant in the past -- it often took 20 minutes or half an hour to get a burger to go even at times when the place was nearly empty. If they're going to be serving food in a reasonable time period, I will be delighted to go there more often.

I snapped shots of the dinner menu and the brunch menu (though not the lunch menu) which may or may not be legible when I attach them to this post.

                                                                                                                                                                1. re: Jacquilynne

(And you are correct - they aren't open on Sundays). I went a couple of weeks back. Nice, cute space and tasty (though pricey) tacos. They have a nice little patio outdoors as well.

I can't find any information about it via Google search. Anyone have more details?

I managed to miss that entirely, somehow. I just googled it, and the consensus seems to be that it is typical mass-produced vacuum-sealed smoked meat that just happens to have the Schwartz's name printed on the box. So that's a shame. I'll still probably give it a shot at some point, though.

The windows beneath the Bed, Bath and Beyond (and beside the RBC), at Yonge/Gerrard are now wrapped with "Midtown Reds Tavern" signage. This is the second location of Reds (the same one on Adelaide) but I would hardly call this Midtown! Not sure when it's opening as this is still in the very early stages.

May or may not be of interest, but I have noticed some people commenting about Popeys - There is a new Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen open on the Danforth - West of Carlaw, past the Pub. It is in the children's clothing store that closed and since then the building was renovated.

Don't think anyone has mentioned this but there is a new Greek Seafood place going into the space that was Wimpy's on the Danforth.

There's yet another AYCE sushi restaurant opening at Flemingdon Park Plaza, 747 Don Mills south of Eglinton called Itamae.

Momofuku Milk Bar is opening today(!) on the second floor of Momofuku. It will be similar to the ones in NYC where it's self serve (i.e. people pick up the cookies they want and pay for them at the counter.)

There's a new bagel place on Queen St East. Unusual name (Bagels on Fire), but stopped in the other day and bagels (Montreal style, baked in wood fired oven) were quite good. Seems the two owners used to work at Bagel House. http://www.blogto.com/bakery/bagels-o...

A new Italian bakery called Il Panettone appears about to on Queen, just west of Parliament. I can't find any info about it anywhere.

Owners are, in fact, Italian so plus 1 on that count. The rest remains to be seen. If they can pull a great espresso, they'd have a good pit stop place.

This is in the lower floor of the condo tower at 832 Bay.

There's also a new cafe right by Sliced Gourmet that's due to open, appropriately named 650 Cafe as it's right at 650 Bay.

I just posted started a new thread regarding this, but apparently a new taco place called Estrella Taqueria is opening in North York @ the end of the month.

Here's what Post City had to say about it:

"Taking inspiration from the famous Big Star in Chicago is Estrella Taqueria, which will open at 4899 Yonge St. later this month. The upcoming 300-seat restaurant will offer tequila, bourbon, signature cocktails and a rotating taco menu, as well as gourmet creations like duck confit nachos. Co-owner Otta Zapotocky (a former manager at Nota Bene, as well as current co-owner of L’Avenue on Bayview) has designed the restaurant to be an easy place for uptowners to pop in for a meal and cocktails with friends".

And on the other side, just a block over, there is a gelato place, which I think was called Zaza's, that I don't recall ever seeing before. Is that new?

Not sure where this will be there does not seem to be a store from labeled 99 Queen E. It goes from 89 (Henrys) then to a Transformer station, then to 111 (the Queen Richmond Centre). I am wondering if the meant 99 Queen West which could be in the Sheraton Hotel

When they did the Queen Richmond Centre thing they consolidated a bunch of addresses into 111 including the old 99, I think this would be the storefront that is/was a coffeeshop immediately west of George.

Our meal arrived in good time, and everything was fine. Excellent americanos I might add.

I recognize that King West is gentrifying but King & Bathurst does not strike me as a very good location for this type of endeavour.
