On the way back into the Bay Area after spending Thanksgiving in Carson City, we stopped at the Lockeford Meat Company (in Lockeford) to pick up sausages. We'd always seen this place while driving through the Central Valley toward Jackson but only stopped after getting a most enthusiastic recommendation from one of our Turkey day hosts.

The Lockeford Meat Company makes a large variety of sausages -- more than a dozen. All are huge, meaty links, and there are both fresh and smoked varieties. As Jesse has a yen for German-style brats, we picked up their Bavarian brats, Wisconsin brats and a Dakota-style brat, as well as some apple sausage. (We don't know the difference between these brats yet.) We've only tried the Bavarian sausages so far, but these were delicious -- very meaty and lean pork sausages, nearly an inch in diameter and possibly flavored with some majoram.

Has anyone tried any of their other sausages? I recall both fresh and smoked kielbasa, linguisa, Swedish potato sausage, andouille, Italian sausage of various heats, cranberry and blueberry flavored sausages, chorizo, and many more. All made on site.

If the owners have not changed for the last few years, it is one of the best sausage makers around. The Bavarian brats are excellent. All their German sausages are authentic and great tasting. Their Linguica is among the best!

I am not a local or employee. I live in Milpitas and drive there for my favorites.

I grew up on Ohlberg's German Sausage from Fresno and lived in Germany. This has been a favorite even over different owners because the process has not changed.

Simply one of the very Best! Take the Detour!
