Questions about Uchi- table vs sushi bar

  • 9

Hi everyone-

I'm meeting up with a girlfriend in Austin and Uchi is on the top of our list of places to try. I'd love to sit at the sushi bar since it's just the two of us but didn't know how difficult it is to get a seat there for dinner. We'd go on a Thurs, Fri, or Sat night. If it's really a hard get, then thinking making table reservations might be the better way to go. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. The sushi bar and tables are all first come, first serve, so it isn't necessarily easier to get one or the other, although being flexible (as in being willing to eat at either) will open up more possibilities. After 6 on Thurs-Sat you're going to have a wait regardless of where you are willing to sit. In my experience, Uchi does not have many reservations available after 5:30. Patience is a virtue. The earlier you can get there, the better off you will be.

Thanks txgrl! I did see that Uchi offers reservations via opentable but maybe they don't release many tables? Appreciate your advice!

Most of the tables are first come, first serve. They release very few to reservations. I've never seen any after 6 pm, but maybe my experience is not typical.

you should look harder, or at least try to look. I just went to opentable and looked 2 weeks ahead. on thur 1/17 I found reservations for 2 available at 7:30, 7:45, 8, 9, and 9:15.

I've looked lots of times, but not lately (as in the past month or so). Maybe they're opening up more times than they have in the past. Personally, I think that's great news! One of the reasons we end up at Uchiko instead of Uchi is that I've always had better luck with reservations there.

    2. If you don't mind going when they open at 5pm, you can actually immediately sit at the sushi bar and also get the benefit of the sake social specials (happy hour).

show up at 4:45, they'll begin seating at 5:00

      1. No resos for the sushi bar, but, yes, getting there early is the best bet. Ask for Masa.
