My husband and I are headed to NOLA for the end of Carnival&would like to grab a bowl of gumbo. Any favorites or tips as to where we could go?

If you want something different the end of Carnival is the right time. Get gumbo z'herbes at Dooky Chase or Gumbo Shop. A few other places may also have it for Lent.

Other than that the best gumbo is the one you like. Similar to the best po-boy, best stew, best hero, best philly cheesesteak, etc.

One friend doesn't like gumbo too thick and another too thin, and that is before we get into the color of the roux and the ingredients!

Gumbo Ya Ya at Mr. B's and the seafood gumbo at Muriel's are both worth a visit.

I have been to New Orleans a few times of the last few years and I have to agree with Collardman...of all the meals where i had gumbo I have yet to have a bad one. Each gumbo is unique in that its preparation has very few rules so the best tasting is a matter of personal preference. Just eat it often and frequently while you are there and let us know what you think. My favorite was probably at Vaughns on a Wed night w Kermit Ruffins and BBQ swingers. He prepares some cookout family style meal for everyone at the bar as a thank you to the crowd. A must visit.

we've had gumbo three times since arriving here on wednesday. Luke's, Coop's and a Poboy place on Magazine (called Magazine I think). Coop's was the favourite--super tasty. Luke's was also delicious thought the shrimp bisque may have been a tad better. I assumed after eating the first two that all gumbo in NOLA was incredible but the bland third gumbo opened my eyes. Try Coop's....

My fav gumbos are Herbsaint and Cochon. High Hat and Borgne also have good ones.
