NJ/NY hounds in Austin for 2 nights - real deal experience

  • 3

Hi All
My husband and I are making a last minute trip to Austin this weekend. Looking for the real deal Austin experience. Franklins for lunch is already on our bucket list - we don't want anything we can get back home ( 86 sushi, Chinese, pizza, Italian etc. - even tho Uchiko looks tempting) what we are really looking for is TexMex, Mex and BBQ - like I said Franklins is already on our list, I'd love someplace with amazing Mole and I've got a real hankering for some pork green chile! We are staying at Hotel San Jose on S. Congress - something in walking distance would be ideal but I've been known to travel a great distance for food. So all suggestions are welcome.

  1. I loved Sam"s BBQ, but it's not for the faint at heart...only the serious BBQ enthusiasts . I recently saw a segment on a place called Luke's Inside Out that seemed interesting. Austin may be the Food Truck capital of the USA....is that something you are looking for?

Here's a thread I started a few years ago...maybe you can get some ideas there.

I agree with the Sam's rec and also the warning about it not being for everyone. Food trucks would also be fun, but DON'T go to Luke's...it's meh.

    2. I'd vote for El Alma for non-Tex-Mex Mex. Their duck mole is excellent.
