Singapore NYE

Again fairly last minute trip and thus no serious plans. Keen to find good food but not outrageous NYE specials. Thoughts on a particular restaurant or possible a good area to head to - for food not heaving bars. Been to Sing many times so familiar with lots of options, just need that local knowledge of what to head for and what to avoid on NYE.

  1. Can I presume, Phil, that you would want views or some sort of NYE atmosphere, or is your question more general than that?

    I'm probably just going to have some nice seafood at a decidedly unglamorous neighbourhood joint and watch the fireworks on TV with a glass of Pol Roger.

      Julian - undecided at the moment but leaning towards relaxed and non-explosive rather than crowded and flashy.

        I think most restaurants with some semblance of atmosphere or view will have some exorbitant rip-off package in place. Even the ones that don't may try to exploit the situation.

        For me, the best fall backs may be the local restaurants who don't deal in $1,000 NYE dinners, although I doubt many of them will be doing the countdown thing or even remain open till midnight.

        If you're looking for something more upmarket, I think Les Amis is doing a very reasonably priced (relatively speaking) menu. Robuchon also doesn't appear to have any NY specials advertised, so might be worth a shot if they're running their regular menu?

          Thanks - will check them out - although my wife is now muttering about a curry or a hawker centre. If a curry where is the best in Sing?

            You probably already know about the favourites in Little India like Banana Leaf Apollo, Muthu's, etc. so I won't go through the list, but a newish opening I do like is the alfresco eatery on the rooftop of the Mustafa Centre, called Curries and Kebabs. It's quite difficult to get up there, but follow the markers painted on the floors at Mustafa! The view is sensational and you're far enough above the Little India bustle to be away from the noise while still feeling like part of the action. The food is very decent and very good value.

            The plus point is that it is open until 1am. The downside is that it's halal, so you can only welcome 2013 with a mango lassi or similar.

              Julian - I wish we had followed your advice. But it was pissing down with rain when we got into Singapore and decided to luxuriate in our hotel - The St Regis - so opted for the NYE menu at Brasserie Les Saveurs.

              To be fair some of the dishes were very good but some quite poor, the foie gras, truffle and smoked duck entree was fantastic and the cod with warm oyster, seaweed and chicken butter sauce was very good. But the pumpkin veloute with lobster tartare and cavier failed because the soup was too powerful for the other ingredients. The wagyu beef was tough, and the black truffle brie (a brie stuffed with a truffle mouse) was simply horrid.

              One overriding criticism of the food was the lack of saucing - a increasing common fault in restaurants where presentation overrides taste and balance. The dishes had good sauces but they were minuscule smears and dabs when the dishes demanded more generosity - if presentation is the objective then serve some sauce in a bowl on the side.

                I had a nightmarish experience at Les Saveurs when it first opened a few years back, and made it a point *never* to go back since. For e.g., when I mentioned to the French maitre'd that the mussels were too dry and hard (it was overcooked) he condescendly said, "Oh, these are handpicked *French* mussels, and that's how *we* French like to eat them". Hmm, odd response. I didn't bother to respond to him then that I'd been to virtually *all* the 3-Michelin-starred restaurants in France in the past 3 decades, so I think I should know a bit more about French cuisine than he'd think an anonymous diner in a backwater little city like Singapore would have.

                I guess there *is* a good reason why it never appeared on the radar of Singaporean foodies & gourmands.

                  I must admit I've only ever been to Les Saveurs for breakfast, and it pulls it off with the aplomb that you would expect of a hotel in its category in Asia.

                  Phil, seeing that it was pissing down, perhaps it's a good thing you didn't take my advice - Curries and Kebabs is way more fun when you're sitting outside enjoying the fresh air. It does have an indoor space, but you're seated inside a bizarre glass dome with a very noisy ventilator.
