Zatis (Piedmont Ave.) closing?

There is a notice for an application for a change of owner for the liquor license at Zatis, a small restaurant on Piedmont Ave. In Oakland. Can this wonderful place really be closing?

    Diablo Mag reports that Dec 31 is the last day.

      Yes, owner Zati is retiring, sadly. We will miss the wonderful mucver (zucchini pancakes), the superb squid salad, and the fabulous Turkish coffee custard!

      I'd love to think that Homestead will be as comfortable, quiet, and relaxed as Zatis, but alas, that's no longer "fashionable". Gggrrrrrrr....

        Zatis had a great run. I'm glad to hear they're retiring, and not forced out due to higher rents. That wonderful relaxed atmosphere and unfashionable but always good food never "went huge" but I always loved stopping by.

          I've lived in theneighborhood for about 6 years and I could never understand how they stayed in business. I never saw more than 3 people in there, ever.

          Diablo Dish says Homestead opens August 1.

          ZATIS WILL BE OPEN ONE MORE MONTH! New closing date is expected to be in late January.

          We stopped by to have a last lunch at Zatis. Zati told us that there has been a delay in processing the paperwork to the new owners, so he expects to be open for at least another three weeks, possibly all the way until the end of January.

          Zatis is a modest 2-star restaurant, nothing fancy or special, but we had the excellent squid salad, the tasty meze platter, and a nice seafood crepe. And yes, the Turkish coffee custard and pear-rhubarb fruit crisp were as always, a great way to end a nice little lunch.

          So if you're a fan of this little neighborood place, you've got a bit more time to stop in and have a last meal!

            Today I was told Zatis will be open until the end of February.

              Wow, the new owner must really be having trouble with the transfer paperwork - either that or the City/Oakland is dragging its heels and being difficult, which would not be unusual.

              Happy as we are to hear that the mucver and Turkish coffee custard are still around, I'm sure Mr. Zati would like to get this deal done and get on with his retirement plans!

                The ABC is understaffed and very backed up, so liquor license transfers can take a long time. They should really raise the fees to hire more staff, that would save most applicants money.

              Their stuffed cabbage was only second to my grandmothers.

                ola, have you tried Speisekammer's (Alameda) stuffed cabbage? Very similar, you might like it.

                ZATIS REMAINS OPEN: New closing date (possibly) February 28, 2013 - CALL to check !!

                The transfer to new owners has been delayed, so you still have at least a couple of weeks more to get thee into Zatis' comfortable chairs and eat their lovely mucver, zucchini cakes; the amazing calamari salad, so much better than the ubiquitous batter-fried calamari rings everywhere else; and their excellent pasta and fish dishes.

                Soup of the day was a yellow split pea, lighter than usual and very tasty. Mucver and calamari salad, mentioned above, are the two things we always, always order. Love them and will miss them terribly. Got the calamari steak special today - excellent! Tender, with a lovely simple sauce of EVOO, capers, lemon and peeled diced tomatoes.

                Spouse had the penne with a marvelous smoked salmon cream sauce, also livened up with capers (not too many, just the right amount), and topped with a generous amount of fresh mussels in the shell, extra-large shrimp, and cubes of fresh salmon. He absolutely loved this, said this was the best dish he's had at Zatis.

                I always finish with the Turkish coffee custard, my favorite dessert. Light, soft, delicious!

                  I just returned from my last trip to Zatis, where I had a wonderful meal and a pleasant chat with the owner. Saturday, March 9, will be the last night. What a loss! Their dolmas are the best I have had anywhere, by far.
