Really tart cherry pie?

Can someone recommend a place to pick up a nice sour and tart cherry pie?

The best way to describe what I am looking for is tell you want I don't want, and what I don't want is the cherry pie from Marie Calendars. Nothing against that pie, but it is, to me, icky sweet.

(And, yes, I know cherries are not in season)

Thanks very much in advance.

Thanks to everyone who recommended Essential Desserts.

Picked up a few mini ones yesterday (thank the mighty 'Hound gods that they were open on a Sunday for the holidays) and they were a hit.

In the eyes of my better half these little suckers made up for the fiasco (at least I hope it did) that was Rendezvous ...

Elizabethan does have cherry pie but I dread the cold service there. There's a place in san marcos called My Kitchen has excellent mini lattice cherry and apple pies. She's also won awards for her peach bread pudding and deserved so.

They have a big selection of cheesecake but it's a 2 person operation so it's best to call in ahead and place your order.

Thats good to know about My Kitchen. Thanks.

And for what it's worth, the service at Elizabethan Desserts was perfectly fine.

Wow, every time I've been to Elizabethan Desserts the service has been cordial and helpful

Read the yelp reviews, you'll see others who share the same view. And this was when I went there prob during their 1st year when they didn't realize the internet can be a bitch if they had attitude and prob made some adjustments internally.

But I found this from a reviewer in june that IMO hits on the head:

"After a long hiatus, I returned a few weeks ago. Product is ok if overly sweet. But something is still off from the staff. Cannot put my finger on it. I waited in line for a good 30 minutes watching them wait on others. It's an attitude. Like they are making this stuff for themselves and the customers and their money are just a bother...a distraction. Odd."

The best cherry pie in SD is the lattice topped cherry pie from Elizabethan Desserts in Encinitas. It is not a sour cherry pie, but neither is it artifical or cloyingly sweet.

Let's just put it this way...I'll drive 35 miles, one-way, to buy one of the lattice topped cherry pies from Elizabethan Desserts. They truly are very, very good.

Well, anyone that's willing to take on Bobby Flay is definitely worth the drive.

          Thanks.

Hmmm....I wasn't aware that she had.

P.S. after I posted originally, I checked her web page and her cherry pielettes are, indeed, made with sour cherries.

+1 on Elizabethan Desserts. Really a no brainer (and I'm not just saying that because she used to be my next door neighbor and give me her bakery's castoffs, which is as awesome as it sounds).

When did Elizabeth challenge Bobby Flay?

+3 on Elizabethan. I don't like cloying sweet pies either and hers are the right balance of tart and sweet.
