Chinese on Christmas in Tampa?

jca76 Dec 22, 2012 08:03 PM

I'm home for the holidays (from DC), and my boyfriend is coming to visit. After we do Christmas lunch with my family, I wanted to take him out for Chinese on Christmas night (he's Jewish, so that's his family tradition). Any recommendations? Back in DC, we love the Sichuan places in the DC burbs, but I have no idea where to go here in Tampa! Thanks!

Your two best choices are China Yuan on Armenia just north of Waters and the Yummy House. YH has three locations but I would suggest the one on E. Hillsborough. While I don't think CY takes reservations, YH does and might be advisable.

BTW, there is also ABC Chinese Seafood Restaurant in St. Petersburg which is another excellent Chinese place in the Tampa Bay area.

^^^^^^^^^^+1 all. A more complete/accurate answer would be impossible. Enjoy.

Hope you enjoy them. If you think of it, come back and give us your opinion on whichever one you go to.

We ended up going to China Yuan. I quite enjoyed the salt and pepper squid and the eggplant in garlic sauce. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely exceeded my expectations on what I thought I'd find in Tampa!

However, it was some of the worst service I've experienced. We made a 6:00 reservation but weren't seated until around 7:00. We insisted on ordering food as soon as the waitress came over to take our drinks order, and we still didn't receive our food until almost 8:00. We finally got our check at around 8:50 when one of our party went to the counter to request it. At no point did anyone come by the table to ask how anything was or if we wanted to order anything else. I hope that this was atypical (maybe because it was busy on Christmas?) so that others don't have the same experience!

I have not noticed this sort of service at China Yuan. The speed of service seems about average. So I would attribute it to the Christmas holiday, concentrating customers in the few open places. Just a guess.
