Mary's Fish Camp vs. Pearl Oyster Bar

Well, I went to Mary's after staying away for a while. Contrary to my previous posts, raving about Pearl and condemning Mary's, I now did a complete turn around. Mary's is warmer, more congenial. Mary's has more creative dishes. Mary's has more choices. The seared scallops with chickpea tagine, and Fayeh yogurt and Harissa, was a fantastic, flavorful, zesty dish and perfect for warming your bones when there's a chill in the air. You won't find anything like this at Pearl. I think the New England Clam Chowder is about equal at both , I also think the lobster rolls are pretty similar. The lemon pudding at Mary's was quite amazing.
I apologize for a past post where I disagreed with Kathryn, and said Pearl was way better. I must have had an off day there, when there was only one fish, one kind of oyster and they were out of many dishes. This week, was a whole different experience.. I love Mary's Fish Camp.

  1. No apologies needed, my friend... Restaurants change, people change! Such is life.

    1. i always felt that pearl's doesnt value their customer. they just sit you down, shovel some lobster meat on a bun, and throw it in front of you. for such a 'charming, west village nook,' i always felt that they treated everyone like tourists.

i go to marys regularly and its the opposite. they may be swamped but they treat everyone well. the food isnt inventive but always solid and probably the best bet of all of the 'seafood shacks' that are opening up all over the city.

      1. I agree 100%. I think Pearl's is good, but have always found Mary's to have better, more inventive food, and friendlier service.
