2012 SGV openings & closings: NON-Chinese

JThur01 Dec 18, 2012 11:24 AM

It's that time of year again. What restaurants opened and closed around the SGV in 2012? Chandavkl and TonyC. have the Chinese restaurant scene covered brilliantly (and I'm pleased on the rare occasion I spotted something before them), so...I'm looking for all other restaurants - Mexican, Indian, Italian, breakfast joints, etc. - and those outside the Valley Blvd. and Rowland Heights corridor.

Yes, this will be a list for publication and I will definitely thank CH and the CHers for the data.

    Chonito's in Alhambra (Mexican)

I could probably populate this thread with 10 posts if I could remember to keep track of all the goings-on on Main St. in Alhambra between Atlantic and Garfield.

Just 2 of the top of my head.

      Opened: Vino at Trio
      Opened: Boteco
      Shuttered: Medium Rare*

(*In fact, I believe Medium Rare opened and shuttered in 2012. Someone correct me if they know for sure.)

        Stupid caveat emptor question:

Do Chinese restaurant generally have a higher turnover rate than the restaurant population at large ?

Vino at Trio and Boteco both opened in 2011

Enrique's Tamales closed in Monrovia, but I don't know the name of the restaurant that replaced it.

The first place to jump to mind is Racion.

The second through sixth places to jump to mind (Vol 94, Wistaria, etc.) all appear, after a bit of Googling, to have actually opened in late 2011. So either this was a bit of a slow year, or I'm just behind the curve... come to think of it, probably both.

Republic of (So)Pasadena != SGV. Not for jthur's purpose.

Well, he did say non-Chinese, so I assumed he meant the entire SGV. Also, I forgot about Neapolis and the new Slaw Dogs on Huntington. But after that, I'm drawing a blank.

Wow, Racion in Old Town Pasadena closed down ?

I thought they were doing pretty well. I've been a couple times, and it was pretty busy, but who knows ?

Being busy does not necessarily always entail being successful.

My apologies. For some reason, I focused on Closings.

And I wasn't absent from day school. Just a very slow learner.

I think that Cafe322 in Sierra Madre closed:

Orleans Corner closed in Arcadia. I think it was replaced by a Mexican restaurant, but I'm not sure.

Liang's Village Cuisine closed in Arcadia and was replaced by "Maru Japanese Restaurant"

I think Denny's Restaurant in Rosemead closed and will be replaced by a Chinese vegetarian restaurant that has gone through several name and location changes already.

I checked today. Liang's Village Cuisine was replaced by "Opus Sushi".

I wonder if they serve Opus One there.

Fish dumplings or fish xiao long bao? Fish dumplings, I like Qingdao Bread Food. Fish xiao long bao, Wang Xing Ji.

Sichuan fish. Hmm, tough call. I've liked it each place I've had it, but Yunkun Garden and Shu Feng both make a good (and very spicy) one.

                          Cantonese Crab...dunno.

I'll have to try all of these.
