I am meeting a friend for dinner, she's coming out to NJ from the city and we want to meet somewhere close to (or on?) route 4 so it's easy for her. Nothing too $$ (entrees under 25), any cuisine except Indian is fine. Thanks for any suggestions.

How far up Rt. 4 are you willing to consider? Paramus?

If you want to make it easy for your friend, meet at Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack. They have many of the "better" chain restaurants (Rosa Mexicana, Houstons, Cheesecake Factory to name a few), all of which should be in your price range. The best place right over the bridge is the River Palm in Edgewater, but I don't think you can eat there for under $25. At Cafe Italiano on 9W in Fort Lee you can probably eat for $25 if you stick with pasta, but the ambiance leaves a bit to be desired. I only eat there in the summer, when you can sit outside on the front patio. The Bicycle Club down the block is definitely in your price range. It's a bar first, then a restaurant, but the burgers and the salads are OK. However, if you are not drinkers, skip "the Bike".

Haven't been to the Square in a while, but Maggiano's Italian used to be there. First time I went to one in Boston, I was blown away. Then to find out it was a chain really blew my mind. And right across the highway is the Coach House Diner...yes, I know...a diner in NJ. Who would have thought.

"Conveyor Belt" Sushi in East Japanese in Teaneck. Fun and price is depend on how much you eat.

Right over the bridge in Ft Lee, even walking distance is Kloe bistrot.
In Riverside sq Mall my pick would be Houstons.

Cafe Italiano, north of the bridge on 9W/Sylvan Avenue in Englewood Cliffs.

The Bicycle Club is a bit further north. Good place to go for burgers. Been there a long time, popular local spot and a good "bite to eat" kind of place. Good burgers and better than pub grub food.

If you want to head west on Rt.4, you can go to Riverside Square Mall and you'll have plenty of selections -- Maggiano's, Cheesecake Factor, McCormick & Schmicks, PF Chang's, etc.

This is probably a little further than you requested, but I had dinner here last night and it was excellent...
