russian on the peninsula - Russian Home in RWC

There's a new eastern european place on the peninsula -
Russian Family Restaurant on Broadway in RWC, between main (where Martin's West is) and the movie theater. I don't remember what was in that space.

Short answer: good place, real mom and pop, and a way with cabbage. Reasonably priced. Stop by if you're into that kind of food.

The menu is much more russian than polish. There's a large selection of soups, and the borszch is a clear one with meat, an everyday borszch. The mushroom soup is good, but not up to Bona's cream based polish mushroom soup - the mushrooms are a bit more ordinary, and meat stock could use more oompf - but it also wasn't too salty.

We had a perogi app, which is a huge log more suitable for street food, and I would recommend the cabbage - nice mix of pepper. The final dish was siberian dumplings, which were very pleasant - good savory meat bit inside, although a lot of dumpling to get to that meat bit, and the shell seemed pre-made. I saw some nice blini plates, but with salmon roe instead of true caviar, and I don't love salmon roe. There are very few real meat plates, similar to russian cooking since wwii where a full cut of meat simply wasn't available for the great majority of people.

Wine is californian and decently selected but nothing special. Beer was staropremen - he's getting the rest of his taps set up in the next few weeks, and will have a selection, unknown what (he had a german and czech). Claimed to have some vodka, but didn't really put together a shot-of-vodka + blini + caviar experience.

Rather bare boxy room, but their spirit fills it with warmth. He was very good with us just hanging out there, even though the place nearly filled up on a sunday.

I still like Bona better, but admit I don't get to Bona more than once a year. This place is a little more accessable and the location is easier to think of.

  1. Thanks for posting. Appears to be the new location for the family that used to be in San Bruno.
