Help me decide between bread machine and Bosch Compact Mixer

I've been trying "Artisan Bread in 5 min/day" for the past few years and have finally decided that I wish I had my old bread machine back. My husband eats sandwiches every day, so "artisan bread" is not as useful to me as a rectangular loaf--and I have not been very successful with whole wheat in loaf pans. (White is fine, whole grain comes out kinda soggy and dense.)

So after a lot of research, I had pretty much decided that I'd like the Panasonic SD-YD250--until I saw on a bread-making blog that someone liked using her Bosch Compact Mixer for making bread. I've now watched the You-tube videos for the mixer and am wondering if I'd get more use out of it than the bread machine.

What I should tell you is that I have (mild) arthritis in my hands and wrists which is why I don't want to have to mix or knead dough by hand. If the mixer can do a lot more stuff, plus make dough ready for loaf pans, then perhaps I should go with that? But I know I'd also be happy with simply dumping ingredients in a bread machine. This is my conflict.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I don't know about the Bosch, but many people use a food processor for mixing and kneading bread dough, and say it works just fine. I use a 40-year-old Kitchenaid stand mixer and it too does the job well. But there's still the shaping of the loaf to do, and maybe a bit more kneading by hand, so if that would be too much for your hands, the bread machine might be best.
