Where to order foie gras pate without ridiculous shipping costs?

I want to order about 8oz of good quality foie gras pate for new years. (I don't need any accompaniment, I'll make a lingonberry jam to go with it myself).

I went to the gourmet food site, but their handling & shipping fee was MORE than the product.
D'Artagnan's prices are higher in general.

Any other online sites you chowhounds have tried that are good quality without crazy shipping prices?

  1. If you're only interested in an 8 oz pate then shipping costs will obviously be high relative to the cost of the product, there are minimums to shipping that can't be avoided just because you're not spending a lot. Is there no local vendor near you like a specialty wine or cheese shop?

    1. Shipping prices are high because the product needs to be kept cold and shipping time must be short. I wouldn't call them crazy, just high relative to your small order.

See if you can find it locally. I see D'Artangnan products locally at Fresh Market. Specifically the small pate you are looking for

That makes sense. I just wasn't expecting over $35 shipping fees! Thanks to the Washington D.C. board, I found somewhere where I can buy it locally rather than online. :)

Whoa, $35 is pretty steep. That's crazy ;-)

Actually I just received some custom bourbon filled truffles and they came USPS express mail. 2 days from Louisville and it was $34.50

Thanks Veggo and maybe we can get together for dinner sometime when you're in Fla.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a great year to come.

Mmmm, I bet they were worth the shipping cost!
