dinner before or after national theatre

Where would you recommend for dinner before or after the National Theatre?

I love great trad and modern British fare, nose-to-tail eating, an unfussy/wonderful gastropub.

  1. Then you should definitely go to the Anchor and Hope on The Cut, about a 5-10 minute walk from the National. Ticks all those boxes, but beware you can't book so before might be your best bet.

    1. Anchor and Hope sounds great. Thanks.

Any other suggestions re where to get a simple, but delicious bite before a Saturday evening performance?

The White Hart pub does a good (not as good as A & H but cheaper and closer) standard pub menu with a good selection of wines/ales and lovely atmosphese. More a pub than a gastropub but has tables and sources its ingredients carefully and cooks them well.

      2. Anchor & Hope is a great choice but the National has several restaurants and maybe this discussion will help.

        1. You won't be able to beat the Anchor and Hope if you want a gastropub, it's one of the best in the whole of London.

Rules is a short walk away as well.
