We will be in Paris between Christmas and New Years. We are taking Parisian friends to dinner and need a recommendation. We are staying in the 5th but we are willing to go where ever it is recommended. We want a lovely place where we will be able to enjoy talking and visiting with each other. We do not feel we need the most expensive but rather something with a warm, friendly atmosphere. Your thoughts please.

Sticking to the 5th, Lilane on the rue Gracieuse off the Place Monge is also a sweet place for dinner with friends... modern French cuisine... and not too expensive. For something a little more trad, I recently had a surprisingly good meal at the just re-opened Au Bon Coin on the rue Collégiale just off the rue Monge/ avenue Gobelins... an old neighbourhood favourite with previously somewhat inconsistent cooking but now polished up and a new kitchen team.

Les Pipos on the rue de l'Ecole Polytechnique/ rue Montagne Ste Geneviève is fine mid-week but can be a little too convivial (+ live trad music) on Friday and Saturday for catching-up chat. Le Pré-Verre will be closed until 2 January

A new Japanese team cooking traditional French food (eg cromesquis) has just taken over Les Degres de Notre Dame, 10 Rue des Grands Degres in the 5th, 01.55.42.88.88, closed weekends. The decibel level 2 weeks ago was 66.8 dB and tables are nicely spread so talking is very easy.

Two very friendly places that are very reasonable: Le Pre Verre and Les Pippos. Haven't check yet with LPV, but Pippos is open the 26th - 29th. ( we'll be in Paris the same period). Rotisserie du Beaujolais is another option, and for candlelit intimacy, Le Reminet.
