Strike, a new Taiwanese place in Kits
Craving a bowl of beefy noodles on a blustery night, I remembered Sam's mentioning that a Taiwanese joint had replaced a ramen spot on Broadway. They haven't changed the decor a ton but it manages to look a bit clubby. The music is pretty hip, the staff is uber friendly and the food comes lightning fast. They seem to be focusing a lot on house made items. Bubble teas will be added in a few weeks with opening specials TBA on their fb page. They're planning on doing real tea, not powder, and fruit, as well as a signature soy and black sesame drink (to mimic the black and white of the logo/name, which references bowling) that sounds rather tasty.
I had the spicy beef noodle with no meat, and the smaller order of chicken nuggets. The soup ($7.75) did have a faint medicinal quality but was quite savoury and hit the spot. The noodles were satisfyingly al dente and very fresh, though I didn't quite get if they were made in house. The pickled veg on top are, and it came with two very generous pieces of baby bok choy. Very ample portion as well, as was the chicken ($6.50). Apparently they are not portioning terribly carefully right now and the customer is getting the value :-). The deep fried herbs on the chicken both looked and tasted like flat-leaf parsley to me, though the server averred it was basil. Salty, green and tasty, regardless. There is likely some MSG involved though not overwhelming. I didn't ask as it doesn't really matter to me.
I liked the feel of the place, I liked the food and I love that it's walking distance from home. Will definitely be back to try some of the sizzling plates, dumplings and other Taiwanese treats.
Here's a couple of terrible photos of my meal and the interior to give you an idea of both.
You TOFTT :-) Hadn't even heard of this place, always good to have another option, ESP. in Kitsilano where I don't even know if there are any other Taiwanese restos (Kerrisdale being the closest from there).
There's already some UrbSpn reviews of Strike:
If/when I'm out that ways I shall check them out.
