I generally take a bottle of inexpensive but tasty red (Barefoot, for example), add simple syrup until I like the sweetness, then add real cinnamon, real cinnamon stick, whole cloves, nutmeg, citrus peel and a pinch of allspice to taste.

Cheap jug burgundy diluted by half with water, Spicy Peak mulling spices. Nicely replicates what I had at a nice hotel on the Oregon Coast which will remain nameless since it might incriminate them.

Blandy Madeira warmed with cloves, nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick. I wish I could enjoy it again with my German ladyfriend who first made it for me, but she dumped me for a french dude and is living in Paris.

I wouldn't use Madeira for this as 1) Your'e adulterating a very nice wine - would you add spices to Latour?; 2) It's too expensive for this purpose.;3) mulled wine is generally agreed to be spiced red wine.

You're better off. Anyone who would do this to Madeira deserves 'some French dude'.
