    1. Title doesn't really say it all though, does it? What criteria are you using to define "best"?

Many people think, like jeeg, that bagel hole is the superlative bagel (i agree) but it is not to everyones taste - its smaller, dense with a strong chew. the new-ish bagel pub on 9th st makes good bagels that are of the slightly larger, a tad bit breadier side (though not all the way out at the end of that spectrum like Terrace bagels).

Ok, I currently adore Murrays's bagels. I like the crusty outside, and chewy inside. Moving to Park Slope next month, and hoping to find something similar to Murrays.

The best bagels, for sure, are to be found at Bagel Hole (so glad those above agree!), at 7th ave. and 12th street. It is the classic NYC bagel: small, dense, crusty, flavorful. All of the others are the usual run-of-the-mill, large, puffy, flavorless kind that has become, sadly, the bagel standard even in NYC. However, I will say that I have been impressed with the bagels of the new bagel place, Beygl, on Fifth Ave. btwn. 1st and 2nd streets.
