Cheap Chinese wanted

This might be a strange question, but I was just reading a thread on favorite Chinese takeout order and now I'm craving Chinese. Can you recommend any good cheap Chinese take out places near Livingston NJ.

My parents have a place near them that does a family dinner for $20 - $30 depending on the number of people you are getting it for. It is a lot of food for the money.

  1. For takeout only (there are no tables), my hubs has taken out many, many Chinese meals from Sun Wah Kitchen at 533 Northfield Ave in West Orange. Hope you like it.

I avoid Sun Wah since I saw the cook chop a bunch of raw chicken then reach up and grab a take out container off a shelf to put my take out order into. No hand washing in between the two steps. Eww!

A friend is a retired Fire marshal and used to do all the restaurant kitchen fire inspections and refused to eat at Chinese Take out joints because of what he saw. My guess would be many are mom & pop places with little or no formal culinary training. Raw chicken is one of the most dangerous proteins in the kitchen and what you saw should never happen even once so it likely happens a lot.

That's why I've never gone back there. My feeling is sort of "what I don't see can't hurt me." Kind of silly I know, but if I haven't see a restaurant making a transgression I don't know if they do. Otherwise I would never eat any food prepared outside of my own home -- probably wouldn't eat in my house sometimes either. ;-)

I know many professional restaurateurs, all went to culinary school & labored through lengthy appreticeship programs. They fully understand and practice food safety to the extreme because they are professionals & their reputation / livelihood is on the line. No concerns eating at their places.

What scares me are the people, often husband and wife teams, who never worked in the restaurant business a day in their life and have no training who buy a cheap takeout business. They spend 2 weeks with the previous owners who they bought it from learning to cook the menu and away they go.

I knew a guy who did just such a thing and used to bring home cases of chicken thighs, bone them out & pound them in his garage. No refrigeration for hours in the heat of summer. That same guy (Korean) told me to never eat Chinese takeout in the summer.

Bill and Harry's on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange is my favorite.

It's been around forever and it's clean and reputable.
