Burger Suggestion Woodbine/Hwy 7

Looking for a great burger spot for lunch tomorrow. We have an hour so long drive out of the question.

if you go to Prime Burger, get some fries. i don't always like thick cut fries but they do a great job with them!

      1. re: auberginegal

The fries at Prime Burger are the best fries I've had in years, maybe ever. Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and taste like potato - perfect. The burger was also excellent, good meat, good bun, but it's the fries that I would make a special trip for.

      2. re: Doopsylalolic

Prime is mostly take out. Hero does not get much(any) praise on this board. There is a south street burger on Woodbine south of 7. If you want to go slighlty upscale Baton Rouge on 7 just east of the DVP does an okay burger with great shoe string fries although I must confess that I have not been there is over a year.

        1. re: Doopsylalolic

Prime is an old school place, like Johnny's but better.

          1. re: bytepusher

            Johny's, BLAUGH.

Never have I been to a place that has survived so long with such an inferior product.

The only reason I went to that place to get a burger, and never again, was all the comments from this board.

So far, this is the only "miss" that I have encountered from this board.

            1. re: stv

Funny you say that. It was from this board that I've heard the most criticism of Johnny's. That's almost like saying you went to the Mandarin because of the comments on this board.

            2. re: bytepusher

Prime Burger closed Dec. 21, 2013. There's a nice sign in the door To Our Valued Customers, It is with mixed emotions that we inform you that after 40 years in business we are closing.

OMG you did not just recommend Hero Burger?!?!?!

                Another vote for Big Moe's.
Also, Hazel's is great for a diner burger n' shake.

                1. re: happycamper

                  Is there a Hazel's around Woodbine Hwy/7??

                  1. re: magic

Oh my mistake! it's near 401. there's only one hazels', far as I know.

                      1. re: happycamper

Hazel's burger is a very densely packed hockey puck of a burger. Difficult to swallow. Haven't tried the shakes. Would stick to breakfast at Hazel's if you have to eat there. If you need to eat a burger on Yonge 3 km south of the 401, Burgers Priest and Burger Cellar are less than a 2 minute walk from Hazel's.

                  2. re: magic

A good but not great choice IMHO YMMV

                    1. re: Davwud

What other burger joints would you recommend in this area?

Only went once. It was pretty darn good. Solid 8.5/10. And I'm a tough judge.

Only problem was the environment. Not very pleasant.

But overall, and especially given the area, I definitely recommend for a burger fix.

                      1. re: magic

There aren't many choices that I know of.

My one visit saw a very over cooked Jucy Lucy. Dry meat, molten cheese, big red burn mark on my chin.
I've heard the regular burgers are better than the JL but I've yet to make a return visit.

                        1. re: Davwud

                          Crappy about your experience.

Based on what I'd heard I went with their regular burger yeah (double actually)... and was very pleased. Was worth the fat: )

                          1. re: magic

I keep thinking that one of these days I need to give the one on Lawrence E a shot. It's kinda convenient if I have to go to a vendor out in Scarb.

                            1. re: Davwud

I was curious about that one yeah....

                              1. re: magic

My next trip that way may include a stop at Al Tanoor though. I guess I need to take them off my shit list.

                                1. re: Davwud

That location I can't vouch for! Never been. But if you decide to go I hope you'll let us know.

                                      1. re: magic

Speaking of burgers, I'm quite impressed with the burger at Stack on Yonge just south of Hoggs Hollow.
A buddy went on Saturday specifically because of my recommendation and thought it was, as he likes to put it, "Spectacular."

                                        1. re: Davwud

plan to try the burger at Stack in the near future- thanks for reminding me.

                                          1. re: prima

The smoked meat sandwich is phenomenal as well.

                                            1. re: prima

Oh, and don't forget Oreo donuts for dessert.

                                              1. re: Davwud

Stack is high on my list. Only so many calories in a week, haha. Guess it hasn't made my cut yet. It will though. Sounds great.

                                        2. re: Davwud

Davwud, there's a Groupon deal for Big Moe's - in case you feel like giving it another shot (on a 50% discount at least).
