Visiting SD in Dec, anything new of note?

The wife and I will be down for a couple of days in Dec. Anything new and/or noteworthy in the Uptown area?

  1. Ha ha. Check out Societe Brewing. Although the brewery is not in the Uptown area, they are making some nice IPAs and their Stout, The Butcher was also very good.

    1. reverse question, you're visiting SD in Dec. Where have you never been?

We have been gone for 6 months, so I'm wondering if anything interesting or noteworthy has opened recently.

I remember, I just thought there had to be a few places you were always curious to try but never got to. I don't think Akinori Sushi was open before you left, I can vouch for them.

Uptown Tavern and 100 wines opened in Hillcrest

Lamont in PB was already mentioned

I've heard good things about Monello in Little Italy

Been to Akinori twice. First meal was fantastic - the omakase sashimi plate was outstanding. Second meal was not as successful but also very good. Haven't had a chance to sit at the bar yet which would probably make the experience better.

Akinori is in the space where Tre Pocellini was located, next to Mama Testa.

      2. Couple of new breweries you might check out.

Thorn St. Brewery on Thorn in North Park. - http://thornstreetbrew.com/

Helms Brewery in Kearny Mesa, off Kearny Mesa Rd behind the Harley dealership. Their claim to fame is a fall harvest beer, Samuin Harvest. I think their tasting room is only open 4 days a week. They're in back of the specialty vets and I had a cat that I was schlepping up there pretty regularly, buzz from the vet crew was pretty positive. -http://www.helmsbrewingco.com/

        1. Low-key. If you need a night like that out. Kyle Bergman, former Lodge Grill chef who started their monthly beer dinners, now runs a one-chef kitchen at the Ritual Tavern. Very old-school. Nothing wowy. But pleasant, comfortable, lots of beers we hadn't seen other places. Rib-sticking dishes and vegan dishes too.

Thanks for the tip. I used to eat at Ritual a lot, exciting to hear they have Bergman on board. Sounds like we will have to check that out.

          2. Welcome back! (forgot that part)

            1. I would hit up Luce Bar & Kitchen and The Patio on Lamont in PB..
