Moti Mahal Delux

I went to the Moti Mahal location in Amritsar a couple of years ago and it was really excellent. The menu looks good and not very expensive at this new NYC location. Has anyone tried it?

It's my and my wife's favorite Indian restaurant. All Pete says is true. And BYO is a plus. We, by the way, enjoy the shots. My wife prefers mild to medium spice while I like it searing. If you do as well, as for their "special hot paste." WARNING: use sparingly.

The shot appetizers are mentioned in the review: Golgappa shots and roomalii khasta.

          Thanks.

I'm trying to remember how I know the name Moti Mahal. Has there previously been a restaurant with the same name in Curry Hill or somewhere else in New York? How long has the one in Amritsar been in existence?

Moti Mahal is a not uncommon name for Indian restaurants in the US. You could have been to a generic Moti Mahal in Dallas, or eaten at the 7.95 Moti Mahal buffet in a strip mall in upstate New York. The Moti Mahal Delux name, however, is franchised. You may have been to the one in Singapore or London depending on your travels.

There is a very famous one in Old Delhi that used to be an essential for tourists, as well as veing very popular with locals.

I just saw the review and will definitely try the place - haven't gotten to it yet. The menu is inviting and so are the prices - much more reasonable than at Moti Mahal in London.

I would get the golgoppa shots just because I can't get enough pani puri but the description in the NYT review doesn't make them sound appealing to me.

I don't know how long the Amritsar Moti Mahal has been around--at least four or five years, I think. BYO is awesome :)

Its not 100% clear from the review, but im assuming they mean "shots" only in the sense that these are small amounts of liquid, and not that they are actually boozy right? there is a delhi-based local/mini chain called punjabi by nature thats semi-famous for their boozy pani puri/golgappas.

There goes my "original" plan to have a bar that serves jaljeera alcoholic drinks. :(

I've eaten here before, and went back 2 days ago after their review in the NY Times. They were swamped, so reservations are recommended. The food is delicious, the gol-gappa shots are very interesting and for anyone who lives in NYC knows how hard these are to come by (not boozy)- byob is a huge plus- I believe they are still waiting on their liquor license. Overall, great experience, delicious food and very reasonable prices. They deserved those stars. Butter Chicken, yum!!

Went for lunch today, amazing food. I had the non vege set and I honestly think the appetizers would have been enough but then the chicken & lamb curries arrived w/the saag & the rice & nan..all for $13. The service was gracious even as the place started filling up.

My husband and I went there in early December with guests and had a disappointing meal. Since it was our favorite Indian Restaurant we are going back this weekend. Any thoughts on food changes?

Had one superb meal a year ago and two relatively disappointing meals in the intervening months. Not bad certainly but unremarkable and nothing like the quality and appeal offered during the period following their opening. Besides, the management was oddly distant and indifferent to simple requests (as well as openly rude to servers). Just no real desire to repeat the experience. Hope your upcoming visit is more successful..

We went last night. My husband who never liked Indian food till he ate at Moti Mahal Delux wanted to try one more time. Before the holidays we had a had a really mediocre meal there. I love Indian food and love to prepare it so perhaps I am more critical. I loved everything but the rice with vegetables which was really bad and we did not eat very much. Yes I would go back again but would refine what I eat. The help staff was great. I love the enthusiastic owner and feel that when she is present things are better. She was not there last night.

What a coincidence. We were there last night too. It was our second time and we loved it. I agree with your husband best Indian Food in manhattan.
