The Worthy Burger in South Royalton, VT

Tried the Worthy Burger last night after hearing many raves from friends. It's about a half-hour drive from the Hanover area but worth it for the well executed burgers, creative toppings, and unusual local beers.

My boyfriend had the basic Worthy burger, made from 100% grass fed beef and served "pink inside." He topped it with bacon, grilled kimchee, and blue cheese. The cheese selections are all from great local dairies but I forget where the blue was from (the menu on their website gives a good sense of their ingredients, but there were lots of little differences on the menu when we were there). The whole combination was perfect, with really juicy, flavorful meat. They serve all their burgers on toasted brioche, which I love.

I had the Turducky burger, made from ground turkey and duck confit. I had heard a few people rave about this one and I have to admit mine was a little dry and not that exciting. Has anyone else had it? A friend mentioned that the food can be a little inconsistent, so I might give it another try. I had it with the Pawlet, a tomme from Consider Bardwell Farms.

We also shared an order of fries cooked in beef tallow, which were wonderful. We ordered a second batch to go with our second round of beers after we finished our burgers. They also have a large variety of sauces (ketchup, spicy ketchup, spicy mayo, pesto, etc.) and a rotating pickle bar.

The beers are a highlight. We stuck to two from Hill Farmstead, a pale ale and a blackwheat IPA, which were both excellent. When we were leaving the bartender gave us a taste of the third Hill Farmstead on the menu, the Society & Solitude #5 double IPA, which was the best of the three.

All in all, I'm excited to have this new burger & beer option in the area, even if it is a bit of a drive. It far exceeds all the other burgers I've had in the Upper Valley so far, and it has a nice warm, friendly environment and a low price tag ($5.50 for the plain Worthy burger, though it's easy to accumulate a higher bill than you realize by adding toppings, ordering more fries, etc.).

  1. My SO had the Turducky on Saturday, and hers was really good.

They are still a little uneven. The first burger I had there was marginal. The one I had on Saturday was great. I think they should continue to improve.
