  1. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/786025 I'm a Primo's man, through and through http://www.primosdonuts.com/ (I always make the same joke..."Primo's -making Angeleno's the same shape as donuts for over 50 years")

    1. Randy's donut shaped building is more famous than it's donuts. For a really great donut try some of Stan's Donuts in Westwood Village like their Reese's Peanut Butter Pocket with fresh banana donut.

      1. They're not the BEST I've had; I like Stan's in Westwood and Donut Man in Glendora better, but they are pretty darned good.

        1. I don't know about the best in America, because I don't think Randy's is even the best in Los Angeles.

That said, I still think it's very good.

I don't get out that way very much, but I will say that Randy's custard filled donut eclair glazed with chocolate makes me weak in the knees, and could probably be legitimately considered a contraband in certain dictatorship-driven third world countries.

          1. Unfortunately I work 3 minutes from Randy's and have had FAR too many apple fritters and chocolate old fashioned chocolate donuts over the past year. Both are excellent.
Unfortunately the quality at Stan's has gone down as the prices have gone up over the past two years.
My new favorite shop is DK's Donuts at 16th & Santa monica Blvd in Santa Monica. It looks like the kind of donut shop I would never go into, but it's great. Their peanutbutter & chocolate is better than Stan's, and their cream filleds are heavenly.

Are you talking about Randy's or Stan's here?

              1. re: ipsedixit

I read Pnutbuddah's post as talking about both places.

To the OP, I like Randy's; it is a landmark building and they make great donuts 24 hours a day, although I wouldn't have you go there late at night. But Donut Man and Stan's are better. Donut Man is better in the spring and summer when they have their famous strawberry and peach donuts.

Hard to read pnutbuddah's post in any way but as:

                  2 sentences about Randy's.

                  1 sentence about Stan's.

                  3 sentences about DK's Donuts

                  1. re: Capybara

I like Randy's overall and I think their raised donuts are their best product. I've never had Stan's. I only ate Donut Man's strawberry donuts just once when a friend bought a batch, and although they were pretty good I didn't think it was worth the drive (not convenient for my friend or me) and if you take them "to go" they get somewhat soggy from the juice pretty quickly. Although it'd be more trouble I think if they could pack the components separately (yeah, I know I'm insane) so you could assemble them later it might work out better. I wasn't with my friend so if I was there I would have eaten one on the spot which I think is usually the best way to measure the taste of an item.

Thanks Capy for the correct analysis of my apparently unclear post.
Randy's - Great fritters and chocolate old fashioned.
                      Stan's - Been going downhill.
DK's - A rising star and my current favorite.
