Now that Sarge's is gone, best chicken/matzoh soup? (And pastrami while you're at it!)

My family has a crazy large soft spot in our hearts for Sarge's. Whenever anyone is sick, I would go there to get "Chicken in the Pot" and a pastrami sandwich (what the hell, I was there) and the four of us would feast on it in our apt. in Brooklyn and whoever was sick would somehow get better and, of course, attribute it to Sarge's.

So what's comparable now that Sarge's burned down? And FWIW, I don't like Katz's brownish matzoh ball soup, so we can cross that off the list from the start.

Thanks!

  1. Chicken in a pot from 2nd Ave Deli with extra matzoh balls on the side, but the pastrami is eh.

Agreed, 2d Ave Deli has an excellent chicken in a pot. And now that the Stage too will soon be gone, they will have to send us deli here in NYC from who knows where.

Yeah. I haven't been there for a while, but I prefer some of their other meats, like tongue and roast beef.

One other possibility is, get pastrami at Katz's and chicken soup at Stage Restaurant, 2nd Av. between 7th and St Marks. Though I prefer 2nd Av. Deli's matzo ball soup.

Have you tried the Matzo ball soup at Mile End? I think it's pretty good. Hurricane Sandy did in their smoker in Red Hook, but the limited menu (and hours) includes the soup.

Nope, I've never been to Mile End.
