Modern and sophisticated lounge/bar in the valley?

Pretty much what the title says...

I'm looking for a modern, cool, sophisticated (read: not tragically hip) lounge bar in the Valley. This kind of thing is easy to find on the other side of the hill, but apparently impossible in the valley.

You know... Music (but not very loud), full bar with modern couches and sitting areas...

Anyone know where I can find this?

  1. Booboo,

You're going to have to be a little more specific. Give us examples of "Modern, Sophisticated Lounge/Bars" on the other side of the hill... Frankly, when I hear someone say "modern, cool, sophisticated" about anything it sounds like publicist-speak for "tragically hip" so some distinction would be necessary to help your search 'cause I'm not sure I see a difference.

    1. If you haven't been into the Federal Bar in NoHo you might want to see if it meets the criteria you have in mind: http://www.thefederalbar.com/

IMHO, The Federal definitely falls into the "tragically hip" category. It may not be the bar so much, as the clientele.

      2. Well, the old standby can be Firefly, with its bar/lounge adjacent area(s).
If you are looking for food, with loungy scene, might try Federal Bar's kid sister down the street, Bow & Truss, while not really loungy, has that vibe nonetheless.

Thank you guys for starting with some recommendations.

For Franklin - "Tragically Hip" is early 20somethings in scarves and pork pie hats all talking about how amazing the script they're writing is.
"Modern and Sophisticated" is mid30s-early 40s dressed well, appreciate style in an understated way and want to meet and discuss anything besides their work.

Decent examples are Bogies in Westlake.
          SoHo House
          Bar 210
          Cameo Bar
          Bar Centro
The Library Bar in the Roosevelt (though that's not "modern' per se)

Firefly is very close to what I'm thinking.

Any other recommendations are appreciated! I'll update where we land for feedback!

Good luck finding something and please report back if you do. I've yet to find a true lounge in the Valley that didn't have a terribly cheesy vibe. Plenty of good bars, but no lounges. Firefly is average at best.

        2. best cocktails in the valley, imho, are currently at black market. not a lounge but pretty much my fave.

Both good cocktails and even better food, but noisy, not loungy, and most definitely a restaurant..
