Sweet Bar Bakery, Oakland - sneak peak Th 11/29/12, opens Fri 11/30/12!

it's official. Friday, Nov 30 2012 is the opening day for Sweet Bar Bakery. Stay tuned--there may be a sneak peak Thursday from 10 am - 4 pm, Friday--full on, 7 am to 7 pm. Hope to read some reports.

    I was running errands in Oakland Sunday morning and decided to drop in to Sweet Bar.

    I had a hard time deciding what to buy, but ended up with a ginger pumpkin cupcake, a mini Salted Caramel chocolate cake, a snickerdoodle, and a bacon gorgonzola scone. The counter person offered to warm the scone for me, and I devoured it on the premises. It was moist and tender, with nuggets of good-quality bacon and just enough gorgonzola to add to the savoryness. Delicious! The other savory offerings looked good, too, and there were also two soups on offer. The snickerdoodle was okay, but could have used a bit more spice from my point of view. The chocolate cake was just big enough for two, and I served it for dinner. It was quite good: well balanced flavors and not too sweet -- in addition to the salted caramel, I detected a hint of coffee in the "crust" around the outside.

    If you care about such things the product tags are marked to list the type of sweetener, and whether it's organic, gluten free, vegan, etc.

    It's a really pleasant, airy space that was sunlit on this lovely morning. I'd previously dropped into Beauty's Bagels, which was comparatively cramped and dark but much busier. Hey, Oakland folks, check out Sweet Bar, which is a much nicer place to sit and has ample parking!

        I ordered their pumpkin-yam pie for Thanksgiving and was very happy with it. Filling was a bit more substantial than a traditional pumpkin, nice seasoning, crust was fine - I'm not a crust fan so not the best person to comment on that aspect of a pie however. Based on that am looking forward to this new spot in the neighborhood.
