best restaurant for lunch at the Grove

I went to an Italian right at the center of the mall, I think it La Piazza, and it was absolutely terrible, so this time, I thought I would check in with the hounds first. The Whisper looks intersesting as does the Morel French Steakhouse...but let me know where you think the best dining experience is. Thank you all!

Second Ulysses! We just had dinner there -- always a good meal. And their brunch is also very good.

Third Ulysses. New Umami is very nice, try their tasty Hatch Burger.
New Mendocino Farms is open just across the street from the Market.
Save some room for some wonderful treats at Short Cake after lunch.

    2. I've had a few decent meals at Morel's through the years, but nothing that stands out, and certainly not for the price point. On the other hand, I often find myself driving to the Farmers Market specifcially to get a plate of chilaquiles de mole with chicken from Loteria. Haven't been to the new Umami, but their burgers and onion rings have made me very happy at the other locations.

Recently had an awful experience at Morels. I think this was the worst experience I have ever had with slow and incompetent wait staff. Plus, the food was marginal at the way, I had a $100 gift certificate and at the end of the meal, I wished I had thrown the gift certificate away and eaten toast and peanut butter at home.

        1. I think you have to take a slightly non-chowish view of things. You're not going to get a great meal at the Grove. So, don't try. Just go over to Cheesecake Factory and get something that's ok and some leftovers to go for another tummy stuffing meal.

But you can get excellent food at the adjacent Farmer's Market. I second recommendations for Ulysses & Loteria, also recommend Brazilian Bbcue place (can't remember the name) and Banana Leaf (Malaysian).

Pampas Grill is the name of the Brazilian restaurant in the market. Build your own plate with veggies and meats, you are charged by it's weight.
I also really like new The Veggie Grill at the other end of the market by Gilmore Bank.

I love Singapore Banana Leaf. That is always my first choice at Farmer's Market. I usually choose the spicy tuna sambal.

I like Loteria but it did not sound like that was the type place the OP was seeking. I guess if pressed I'd go with Umami.

              2. Umami is my favorite place there. Great decor and always good food. I would avoid Fat cow. Overpriced and subpar food.
